Heat\AC fan knob only works on HIGH....help

If this has been answered before please pardon my post, I am a newbie and would like some help. I just bought an 05 wrangler sport today and the first 3 fan settings dont work. Only the HIGH mode works and it is very annoying. Is this a common problem, and is it an easy fix? The dealership said they would look at it, but its an hour away and would like to fix it myself if it is a very easy fix. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance. I look forward to talking with you guys a lot in the future.

-Mike

Yep that's nothing more than the resistor pack. On the fan's High speed, all the resistors in the pack are bypassed. That's why when the resistor pack goes, the fan will sill run but only on its' highest speed. Resistor packs are neither expensive nor difficult to install.

Jerry, is it possible that maybe you give me a little rundown on where to get the part and how to install it? Even a link to another thread that has this information would be much appreciated.

For this kind of part you will have better luck just going to the dealer. I'd tell you how to install it but your 2005's resistor pack is totally different and in a different location than my '97 TJ's is. Basically it's close to the heater fan motor above the passenger-side footwell. IIRC, it's a credit-cared sized module that is easily replaced... your resistor pack is way different than what I have.

You just have to love the fact that they re-designed this part and it fails just as often...thanks DC!

This might give you a good idea where to begin looking, I had the same problem and the resistor was the fix. http://jeepinohio.com/viewtopic.php?t=2631

I only have low and second from low speeds. High and second from high are dead. The last parts guy a few years ago said there was no resistor pack and I had to change the control unit, about $100 IIRC. Changing the control unit did fix the fan speeds last time. THis time I went to a different diealer. The parts gal, yes I said gal, said there is a resistor pack. She said she has never sold the control unit only the resistor pack. But from what Jerry is saying it sounds like the resistor pack is not my problem since I don't have high speed. This is getting old, this is the second dead control panel in less than two years.
I just want to be sure you guys agree that if I don't have high speed then I have to buy the more expensive control panel.

Please Help

I found this post this afternoon and recognized it as the issue I am having. In my case the lowest fan speed does not work but the others do. I checked the post referenced in a different forum above [ http://jeepinohio.com/viewtopic.php?t=2631 ] and the pictures were very helpful. Called the dealer and got the part for $20. I started the install but am having a hard time finishing it. [I am 6'2'' and it is hard to get on the floor and work over my head under the dash.]

The flat side of the resistor pack tucks into a hole and there is a connector that plugs into it. This connector has a red tab and while I have pulled the tab out I still can't separate the old resistor pack from the connector. I am afraid of forcing anything and the cables are too short to pull them far enough from the dash to look at it in the open.

I spoke to the dealership last Winter about this and they wanted over $200 to do the repair so a $20 part and some info here are greatly appreciated.

I haven't gotten any PM's yet.

The receipt from my dealer says the part is "5139719-AA RESISTOR 8035022" and the package itself says 5139719 also.

I just did this last night -- it is a a real pain in the @ss getting that thing in an out!

It sounds like you can't get the plug out of the old resistor, right? Here is what I did:

Use a screw driver and push up on the red tab from the bottom. I pushed it all the way out. From the bottom, push a falt head screw driver in where you just pushed the red tab out. There is a plastic clip in there that goes over a tab in the plug. Lift up on the clip with the screwdriver and pull the resistor and plug apart.

Hard to explain, i know, but if you look at the new resistor you will see the tab I am talking about. Hope this helps.

If only I'd seen this 30mins ago! That is exactly what I found out.

That green neon colored plastic thing to the right of the fuses is also connected to the inside of the dash by plastic pressure connectors. I disconnected the two pieces of the neon green connector from each other first, then disconnected the part from the dash. Once I got that neon thing dangling out of my way I could pull the old resistor pack and connector under the dash and actually look at it. Once that was done I could see the tab that needed to be pressed on the underside of the red clip.

That was after wrestling last might with how to get to the screws holding the old resistor pack in the dash. Luckily I had a small socket set I remembered having. Pain in the bu ... no ... pain in the a$$ !

I move we sticky this as when i was searching, a number of times I saw resistor pack but no install instructions until I found this thread. Just an idea though.

Question: If the vent director knob (AC knob) on the right is set to anything but completely off - the air is moving even if the fan speed know is turned all the way left (off), correct? Almost so soft you can't feel it but you can hear the fan moving really quietly. I haven't had low speed since last Fall so I forget but it seems familiar. I have low medium and high speeds. 4 white dots.
