Hand throttle ..Yes or no?

How safe is adding a hand throttle? I just worry about rather or not kids could play with thing while driving or who knows..Can it be locked out while not off-roading?

You can disconnect it from the throttle if your not using it. BUt how are you worried about kids using it? While your driving or while they're driving I'm a little miffed about that one? It definitely is a necessaty for me. ALthough I did have some minor issues with mine since it was homebuilt from a bike shop. The sleeve frayed near the end on the throttle and would get stuck when I pushed the gas in. Easily fixed but was a concern for when my wife used to drive the DOghouse.

It loops over an arm on the throttle body under the hood. Just disconnect it when on road. I leave mine hooked up all the time, and have never accidentally egaged it.

I got it back from a valet once not running. I got in and it was fully engaged. I didn't notice, and when I started it it tached up. What an idiot. I love parking valet with the girlfriend. The valet's have not figured how to help her in without a good push on her butt, and they have not actually done that yet. It is fun to see them perplexed.

Off road it is a great tool. I occasionally stall on steep inclines. Now I don't have to take my foot off the brake to hit the gas. Now I don't roll back at all, and put all that stress on my driveline when the clutch disengages and it starts going forward.

I can unhook mine in seconds after popping the hood.

I never do, but it is an option if I ever wanted to.

The way mine ended up getting mounted (not on purpose, it just happened that way) it hits my shifter knob. You have to push it past the knob with just enough force that it won't happen by accident. I added just enough slack in the line so that it still doesn't add any RPM by moving it past the knob, so it sort of works like you have to arm it by pushing it past. Does that make sense?

It was the best $8 investment I've made yet (made mine from bike parts). Just use a connector on the throttle end that will allow you to leave it disconnected when you're not wheeling.

So is the hand throttle like a gas pedal - does is return when you let go of it (like letting off the gas pedal)?

Yes, it connects exactly like the gas pedal. There is a spring connected to the throttle for return. I love mine and it was my only "free" mod.

Actually the price of a homemade one around here is almost the same price as the RE one.

It's my understanding that it does not return if you let go of it, that's the benefit of it. This way you can rev up your motor for winching, welding or whatever else you can think of, without having to be in the cockpit!

For safety reasons loosen the nut so its loose and springs back. You can always tighten it up for winching or welding. Ive yet to need to rev it up for winching and keep it locked.

I'm going to have to whip out the "I have four kids" card here, and if any one of my kids were to touch the hand throttle, of course I don't have one but if I did, I would take it just as seriously as them messing with the shifter, parking brake or anything else they shouldn't mess with in a moving vehicle and take that time to explain the importance of safety.

As far as it being safe, imagine this, next time you're driving just mash the food feed to the floor and hold it there for a few seconds and see what happens. Of course actual results will vary becasue it's going to depend on how long it takes you to say "O SH**" and then crank the hand throttle back, some people act quickly and some don't.

Keep it loose and it will spring back on its own.

Well here's how I did mine, sorry no pics yet. I found an old shifter from a shimano bike. The shifter is one of those 'click' shifters for a back gear derailer (clicks 1-7). Run a long enough cable, the exact type of cable as the one on the bike (black outer case with metal wire moving freely inside), from the shifter down the shift boot, through the fire wall, and up along the pedal throttle cable. There is a second hole in the bracket holding the pedal throttle cable right before it connects to the throttle. That second hole is for the cruise option. I made a piece that would hold the outer black part of the cable to that bracket while the wire moves freely from there to the throttle. The wire attaches to the throttle on the opposite side of the pedal throttle wire. The 'click' of the shifter keeps the hand throttle open to the desired number of clicks.

I set up mine so that the first click does nothing, and I can only actually open up the throttle 3/4 way on the 7th click. I shouldn't be using the hand throttle if I need to run full throttle, and i really only use it on the trail.
