GP takes on another... Jeffs 6.0 Green Machine

The latest tech build project to go under the knife at the shop... Its a trade... Jeff is tearing down and rebuilding my blown powerstroke 6.0 while I design craft and build his TJ.

Short Version... Jeff got the jeep for a great deal. he wheel it, it sat, we fixed some things, it sat. he got the wheeling bug again after rolling his razor. he bought tnt high line fenders... we high lined it... it went to paint. he took it on one wheeling trip... sank it. brought it back. it sat. he went down south with his razor for a long weekend... he came back with a big grin and the jeep was in the shop within 2 weeks.....

in the last few months he has sourced a 6.0 LS motor, 4l60e transmission, and a matched set of ford 1978 ford dana 60s [yes In deed]. we placed a big order with artec for brackets, trusses and tabs. got some johnny joints in another box and most recently, he ordered up some comp cut armor from sniper fab works. single triangulated rear.. looking to triangulate the front as well

We used a set of standard LS motor mounts to mount the engine and will be using one of our Axxis crossmembers to mount the transmission.

the 6.0 is out of an 06 chevy van..ehh and is DBW. were are switching it back to DWC and thus speed density. Camaro manifolds already on it. the chevy van was equipped with hydroboost brakes, so we are installing that system and going full hydro on the steering.

undecided on tires size just yet... at the minimum 40's but no more than 42-43's.

the rear frame was spontaneously decided to be back-halved and thus was immediately cut off with the plasma torch last week. the artec back half kit was ordered after LOL. we are possibly going to chop and extend the front frame section, however we are undecided on that point right now.

rear fuel cell in the tub, most likely recessed.

based on his previous experiences and knowing jeff, this jeep will not be keeping the shiny side up. wheels up with him, doesn't mean we are taking off...well maybe it sorta does. I am currently building a cage for the jeep

okay enough with the boring stuff...

the high-line

back in the shop...ready to go under..

enter a 6.0

frame all prepped.. no more mounts... time for the new powerplant...

stock brake/clutch system gone...

bill prepping the new 1 tons..

more to follow...

frame and cage work....

bill cutting off brackets and grinding the frame in readiness for link brackets

this is what happens when you give jeff the plasma cutter

enter in 80' 1.75" DOM

no cage, no rear frame... ready for the next stage...

ahhh the cage work begins. we talked long about the cage. truth is up here in Michigan, the weather is sooooo unpredictable. after many cage designs, tube chassis designs, juggies, etc... we decided to build a cage that he could still put a factory soft top over and get out of the elements if needed, as well as keep the heat in during winter wheeling.

little more cage work.

starting my X brace. the lower hoop is going to be tied to the new back half kit. the cage/tub/frame are going to become 'one' shortly.

he/we haven't decided whether we are going tube to the floor in the front or going with dash plates/stanchions yet. most likely, it will be tube to the floor yet nothing is for certain.

Funny. I'm literally texting my friend about an 06 6.0 van motor right now. It comes with the drive by wire as well. If I wanted to install DWC how do I satisfy the computer?

you have to check the numbers on the ECU itself or just open the ecu. if it has a certain circuit board still in it, you can re-flash it to DBC. If it doesn't, you need to get a computer that does support it. I will supply more info on that in the next week or two. one way to do it.... short version is: re-program the computer to a speed density set up versus the mass air flow. loose the maf meter and install an independent IAT sensor out of a Camaro. if your ecu doesn't have the right 'internals' you can t do it and need a different ecu. I am pretty sure that jeff needs top source an older ecu for his build to make everything happen correctly. it has been a minute since I messed with the wiring/ecu portion of the project. his stuff is still in a box under my wiring board.

more cage work....

tomorrows plan... top rear bars, begin front cage work. decided on just going 'tube to floor' set up. I will grab measurements and then do a profile template on bend-tech. I think my JD tube bender is worn out....

today got even more expensive for me.... so not only do I need new heads and injectors on my 6.0 powerstroke... yep might as well add a new turbo too! awesome.

Ohh okay, almost like the old TBI set ups where they used air temp to determine how much fuel is added instead of an actual flow sensor. Ok. Doesn't seem to be worth the effort. I'll just be sure to snag the pedal position sensor (unsure of what that is called... I think the DBW then the TAC opens throttle body)

Thanks!

yep.. grab the pedal assembly and the TAC module. drive by wire [DBW] is easy to set up, especially if you have all the parts from the same vehicle. DONT forget the TAC! make sure you get the pedal plug and some wiring on it to attach to!

things are moving along on this project atleast! the cage is pretty much all setup/mocked in. just need to do the front floor plates and then tie the cage to the frame. I am seriously considering doing a tubular backhalf to the jeep. We have the artec stuff on order and its 'shipping' but, IDK, kinda want to do the backhalf myself.

the cage turned out pretty sick.

Jeff is currently on his way back from Indiana.... with some 42's on raceline beadlocks in the bed of his truck....

no problem, ill just need your CC number LOL

I said the heck with it and started the back-half project sunday night. with as low as jeff wants to go with the jeep, I will need the 'most' I can get get out of a rear 'chassis' design. every inch helps. the artec kit requires a 1" body lift... nope, jeff is against it and thus one of my biggest challenges to this build. for example, we had to 'adjust' the tub floor to 'clear' the rear 4 link brackets. jeff accomplished this with a 3lb snap on hammer

I went ahead and cut the frame equal distance on both sides from the rear body mounts. bent up some 1.75" DOM to use for the rear frame rails, then punched some 2" holes through the rear tub for the new rails to pass through. on the backside, the extended frame rails are going to be notched and a stubby bumper crafted to them with D ring mounts. under the tub I will cross brace the tube rails and add tabs to tie in the body mounts

and so I destroyed my iPhone sunday as well. I just went to load some pics and realized that I left my extra cord at home. awesome. well then... pics to follow later
