What does part time 4WD mean? I see a full time light right next to it in my dash. How do I get it to full time? It says my axle up front is 186mm and my rear is 175mm. I checked the sticky about stock specs and neither of those mm are on it?? And what is the CHMSL Lamp?

Sorry im new to jeeps and just trying to figure stuff out...

you have a trac lock in the rear, post pics to determine the axle type. The torque converter is just a part in the auto tranny like a clutch sort of deal

and
the CHMSL is the 3rd brake light.
You have Part Time 4wd. This means you can't leave it in 4wd all the time - can't use it on a hard surface like pavement. You can't get to Full Time, you don't have it. That cluster was used in other models that had that option, but not TJs.

So if it snows hard here in town and i put it in 4WD is it gonna work going through town? If im out wheeling and I turn it on is it gonna work the whole time or just in mud and not on gravel? Im confused about the whole part time thing. I thought if I put it in 4WD IT WAS IN 4WD ALL THE TIME Is EVERY TJ this way or was it an option?

I will post pics of my axles in a couple minutes.

when you put it in 4wd its locked in 4wd it wont switch on its own. part time means you have to pull the lever to switch between 2wd and 4wd and cant leave it in 4wd all the time. no 4wd on dry pavement, any loose surface, snow, gravel, mud, dirt etc. is fine.

Or another way to look at it, you can only use it part of the time. Full time can be used full/all of the time.

Just to clarify a bit more...

A full time 4wd equipped vehicle has a clutch in the tranfer case that allows the front and rear axles/shafts to turn at different speeds, similar to limited slip in a differential.

Part time 4wd's, like our jeeps, the transfer case locks the front and rear axles/shafts so that they turn at the same speed.

For this reason it is recommended to only use on surfaces that allow the wheels to slip and prevent the transfer case from binding.
