Getting from 3.07's to 4.10's or better

I'm getting ready to graduate from my 3.07's. I have a 2000 TJ Sport running on 31's. A local shop shop quoted me $2000 for a rebuild/regear and about another $300 if I add a limited slip in the rear. I've read all kinds of posts and opinions on Danas, 8.8s, Cherokee take offs. As a result I'm rather lost. I called a local salvage yard and found a 4cyl TJ that just rolled in. They're proud of their axles though. $900 plus for the front, $700 plus for the back. I am reasonably mechanical and am wondering if I should tackle the regear myself or shoot for a easier swap? Any thoughts?

Find cheaper replacements. You should be able to find them from a pick and pull for under $200.

You could probably talk to someone who's looking to regear from their 4.10's to 4.88's (ME) and would sell them to you for cheap.

$2000? That sounds like a lot. It should be 4 to 6 hours labor + parts. Maybe $1300 to $1700? Make sure you get a specific list of what they are doing for the regear.

I would do the Dana 44 swap for the rear, and regear your front Dana 30. Make sure it's a manual transmission if you want 4.10. The auto's have 3.73

Any other shops in the area that do regear? $2000 bucks seems pretty steep to just go to 4.10s.

check out east coast gear and supply. you can get just about get an 8.8 and high pinion 30 for that price. that;s way too much. also check out pirate 4x4's classifieds, i find they have more axles there. dont forget craigslist, that's how i upgraded.

I paid $1500 for my 8.8 with new disc brakes, 4.10 gears, and limited slip from ECGS. Than I paid $300 for a take off D30 with 4.10 gears(the guy was selling a set for $700 and I managed to get just the front from him). Which I built up before swapping under.

You shouldn't pay more than $1200 to regear front and rear axles, expect more for locker and limited slip(obviously).

The guy that owns the local Jeep parts shop will regear axles for $600 each! 2k is very high IMO. And those prices for D30, D35 are a little high too. Have you watched Craigslist? A straight swap is very easy. I'd say take it on.

I tackled a regear for my first time with lots of help from the guys on the CJ forum. With the proper tools, and a set of "setup" bearings, you can do it yourself. It took me probably around twenty times of taking the gears in/out to get the pattern correct. But now that I have done it before, I could do it in an evening per side.

It would be helpful to ask around and find someone maybe from a local club that has the experience, and see if they will stop by and read the pattern for you before you button it up. I posted HQ pictures, and guys on the forum read them until we all agreed it was good to go.
