Gear adjustment question
Okay I started installing my 4.56 gears in my Dana 35 rear in my 97 TJ. I got everything disassembled and reassemble. I have the required 6-8 for back lash. I have the required 14 inch pounds of resistance on my pinion. My only question is no matter where I add to the left or right I still get a non-acceptable patern on the gears with the gear marking compound. I know I have good contact, but the gear paper shows that they should only contact right in the middle. Right now I getting about a 75% coverage when they touch. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks, Kent

What do you mean, "75% coverage"? However large the mark, it should be centered on the ring gear tooth.

Let's see some pics and maybe go from there? How is the depth of the contact. Also let's see both sides of the teeth. Center is what you want but pics would help also.

![]() Something similar to this. Says the where I have means the pinion is to close, but I only have one shim between the bearing and its the smallest one with the kit. My Jeep is in the shop I am renting for today and tommorrow. $200. I really need it done tommorrow. Does any one have a good picture for me?

Here's a shot before I installed the gears. Drove it about 20 miles with no problems so far. Let me know if it looks good. Thanks, Kent

It looks to me that most of your contact is in the middle. Also get some shots from the other side as well. Kent also take my advice with a grain of salt because unlike some people around here I can tell you i have done one gear set up about 3 weeks ago and from what i have been told and learned is the only advice i can give you. There are plenty of people here who have more experience. I'm just trying to help but also telling you that i am a newbie at it also. There is also a good right up in pirate on gear set ups. But if you really feel that it sets in too much take the other shim out and see how it looks with the other one out. I was also told not a good idea to run the gears in too much before they are actually set up correctly. HTH. Here is a pic sent to me from a shop after i did mine for reference.

Could you do me a huge favor and print the photo and take it to the guys that did yours or email them and ask them? I would owe you big time. No one, that has ever done gears on here is really helping out. I would greatly appreciate your help. No one here in Japan thats ever done it before. Thanks, Kent

Oh... I am starting my D35 HP tommorrow. Here's a question for someone. I went to pull my E-brake after the rear install was complete and it come's all the way up with almost no resistance. It does how ever set the rear brakes a little. Any ideals? Thanks, Kent
