Gas spilling over when filling

When me and my buddy who both own 2005 wranglers (an X and a Willys) fill our tanks the gas spills over. Why? It happens at most gas stations, most of the time. Can anybody shed some light on this one?

I think this has been covered before and the answer was no one really knows why they do it. I have a 2005 also and it does it too. It never did it up until about 8 months ago. Then it started and hasn't stopped. The only thing I can say to try is guestimate how many gallons you will probably put in the tank based off the gas gauge and then as you get close to that release the lever on the gas pump about half way to fill the tank. This seems to let the tank breathe better and its worked pretty well with me.

Alright, so it's idiopathic?

great, i love filling my tank, this sucks. I won't fill it up anymore because the gas has already started to strip my paint, and yes I do wipe it off and wash as soon as possible

Shouldnt be strippin ur paint man. I have had it spill on my jeep many times and my paint looks as good as when i bought it. Leaves a mark on the flare yes...but that comes off with washing.

I have the same problem regardless of the gas station I go to. I just don't fill my tank anymore and when I absolutely need to I just stand back and let it fly.

My 2006 just started over spilling on the fill-up a couple of weeks ago also. I hate seeing any gas wasted.

If the tank begins overflowing after it was OK for a long time, I'd look for a vent line becoming clogged or pinched. It sounds like something has changed. I don't have any problems with my 03 X, yet.

Go figure. Mine stops too early for my liking...

I can usually fit in about 2 1/2 gal after the autostop has stopped the pump, but then it's pretty much to the brim.

Mine Too

There was a thread on this quite some time ago, and yes my '05 started doing this also, and no it doesn't matter what station I am at or how I put the nozzle in the filler neck. The best anyone could figure out in the previous thread that it is a faulty roll over valve and can only be changed by swapping out the tank. It should be covered under the emissions warranty though, guess someone needs to call their local dealer to see what they say.

I too have an 05 X that does this. Tired of spilling gas. Anyone call their dealer yet? I will do some research and see if its as widespread as it seems here...
