gas mileage

Hey guys, my parents are complaining that a jeep isn't practicle cause it won't even get better gas mileage than our big fat expedition. What kind of mileage do you guys get so I can convince them it isn't that bad? oh, i'm definitely gonna get a 6cyl too not a 4.

I don't think anyone has ever, in the history of Jeep, convinced significant others (spouses or parents) that a Jeep is practical. It is fun, useful, capable, and did I mention fun? Tell your parents that it is VERY reliable, you won't get stuck or stranded when you are trying to visit them, and it keeps it's value better than any other vehicle in the under-$22k price range.
I get a pretty consistent 15.8 in the city and around 16.5 on the hiway. It's pretty windy around here (Kansas) so the hiway wind resistance doesn't help.
Good luck!

The 4.0L gets slightly less milage than the 2.5L but in general I get 20 MPG on the HWY and down to 16 MPG around the city (usually around 18 though). It depends on what road I'm on, there is a pretty curvy road that winds along the river and I drop to 16 when I run that, lots of slow down and speed up places. But then again, with the pedal almost floored trying to go faster than about 70 on the highway and I still get 20 MPG go figure..
We have a V8 5.0L Explorer and that gets 16 MPG tops so if you want to compare vs a Ford V8, you'll do as good or better with your smaller engine.
I have a 2.5L YJ not a 4.0L TJ so my numbers could be slightly different but not by much it's mostly the same.

I tried to explain to my TJ that it had to be less of a drunk. I gave her hedders, exhaust, jacobs ignition, k&N Throttle body spacer, and what did she do? She became a every other day drunk.
I have a 98', 4.0, auto., dual tops
33's, and a crappy D35 with 3.07 gears.
I might get better milage if I changed the gears, but I am waiting on my D44.
Oh did I mention I get 14 hwy and 11 city? I was in the single digits when I started. If you want the terms "gas milage" and "Jeep" in a valid argument, go for the 2.5 and a standerd, with a hard top, and dont plan on lifting or bigger tires.
Bcompton is right. A Jeep is by no means practical. However they are the number one vehical under the 25k price range that will consistantly hold there value, with very little deprecation compared to others.
If there argument is gas milage, be prepared to exploit its other virtues.
A Jeep is an american icon. Relaible, consistant, capable, one of the most easily recognizable vehicals on the road. One of the only vehicals that the basic design has not changed in over 50 yrs. Think of how often other vehicals had to change to keep thier popularity. President Franklin D. Roosevelt is credited with saying "Without the Jeep, America would not have prevailed in the war." (refering to WW2) For a machine designed to replace the horse to still be around, I think is enough to convince a parent to buy you one.
Did I mention its fun?

Mine's a 2001 TJ, 6 cylinder. I get a solid 17 to 18 miles per gallon, but most of my driving is on the freeway, at the limit. This has got to be better than your parents' truck!

Well due to the fact that the Ford is a gas hog... not as bad as its bigger brother... but it is a beast and sux down gas like it was you or I drinking water on a 110 degree in the shade day. What I'm saying is the 6cyl should run around 14-18 mpg with no problem. I do agree with compton though - there is nothing practical about it other then it will get you where your going... He is also right about the Holding Value part - I had a 97 TJ that I sold in 2000 for 11,500 with 73k miles. Good Luck!

You can tell your parents that since there are so many aftermarket parts available for old Jeep Wranglers such as suspension and drivetrain parts, replacement tops, and aftermarket seats, Wranglers can be kept on the road longer than other vehicles. In other words, you will not have to junk it like other cars if the interior gets old and torn, etc. If that is not practical, I don't know what is.

Well, heres the mileage I get... about 15 and I'm running a stock Sport Automatic, and that's on the Freeway (I drive at about 80 so I know if I eased off a little I'd get better mpg) A Throttle Body Spacer is said to give about 2mpg better as well as a K&N air filter... (can get both for about 100 bucks)

My parents tried pushing me towards something else but they really didn't have a say so cause I'm the one ******* over all the money... LoL

Good Luck

(besides a roll-cage is safer then a thin piece of sheet metal)

I use my Jeep mostly in the city and less on the highway, but I get about 14-15 mpg. I also have had no regrets and no problems with my jeep.

One argument is the low cost of maintenance and repairs. I just hit a deer doing 45mph and trashed my grill fender radiator. Total cost was only $515, I did all the work myself except repainting the grill.

Its also a great hobby that will teach you valuable lessons, like how to save every penny so you can spend it on the jeep and gas to drive the jeep. Plus you learn how to maintain your vehicles. Also if you get a vehicle you like you will take better care of it vs getting a Honda that just gets dogged and trashed, then totaled.

You need to lead the argument away from gas, as that is not a winnable one.

I get 17mpg stock, being light on the gas but with some heavy armor. City I get 15s.

It's a practical off road vehicle for sure! So just start taking it off road, and then you have a good argument for them Though, I shouldn't be talking cause I can't remember the last time I've done that...

It may not be practical in terms of gas mileage, but it sure is reliable.

But to answer your question, I get about 14-16mpg, but I drive it like a grandpa
