Fumoto Drain Valve

this weekend I will be installing the skid row engine/oil skid...The skid has a notched out area for access of the engine oil pan but the area is very small and when you drain your oil it looks like its going to just drip all over the pan...in order to prevent this I ordered a fumoto drain valve...I was wondering if anyone has this setup? I have heard from a friend of mine that when he took his valve off, there was a good pint of fluid that didnt drain out when the valve was in the open position...I quickly looked at the valve and it looks like a simple brass ball valve. Do these things have draining problems?

Works for me, never noticed it didn't allow all the oil to drain out but then how would ya know? What I do know is that it still doesn't remove the biggest source of oil spillage, changing the oil filter!

and its funny you say that because their big sales pitch is change your oil without a mess! never use tools again! Its the greatest thing since sliced bread!

It works great, especially with my oil pan skid. It has no draining problems what so ever.

I just installed mine with the last oil change. Haven't tested it yet but heard nothing but positive things about it.

That darn oil filter is messy... if I don't spray down the engine after I change the filter, it looks like I have an oil leak for a week

If you get the one the nipple, did I say nipple , you can attach a hose and let the oil go into a couple of disposable containers, I use a couple of 2 liter bottles then just drop them off at the recycler.

filter is the real pain, I always seem to drop it in the pan, gack!

I have the nipple type...I assume im going to need some 3/8 or 1/2 inch clear vinyl tubing. I havent taken a real good look at what size I need but we have a bunch at our shop...To reduce the mess when I change my oil I wear the rrubber gloves...I wear em when I go any kind of grease work and it cuts down on the amound of instant orange you have to use when your done

In response to the valve not letting all the oil drain out - I recently had to take my oil pan skid off while going to a long arm kit and had to take my Fumoto drain valve off, I opened her up and let all the oil drain for a good 20 min, till there was a drip every couple minutes, then wrenched it off and maybe 5 drops of oil fell out - almost nothing, so I'd say it does a great job letting all the oil flow out. You won't be disappointed, I wish I could still use mine.

To cut down on the mess involved in changing the oil filter, I punch a hole in the side of the filter and let it drain before I remove it. I use a long shank wood drill bit to punch the hole, the flat spade type bit not the round type. The one I use has a shank about 14 – 16 inches long, this lets me come up from the bottom with enough length to tap on the end of it without the engine or frame getting in the way. Whatever you choose to use, keep in mind that the sharper it is, the less it will deform the side of the filter when you make the hole and the better it will drain. Just punch a small hole about half way out on the length of the filter. Let it drain (it’ll be slow). After it stops draining, turn the filter off one turn so that the hole is back at the bottom again and it will start draining again but the seal is still seated against the engine. After two or three turns like this, letting the filter drain with each turn, when you remove the filter you will have very little oil running down the side of the engine. It’s a bit slow to do it this way, but you have a lot better control over where the oil goes and a lot less mess down the side of the engine. If you start the filter draining first, you can drain the pan, check tire pressures, etc while it drains.

I use a relocation kit for the oil filter, makes things so much easier. I have it accessible right when I open the hood. No mess.

Which oil filter relocation kit did you use? The Permacool kit?
What filters fit after the relocation?

Where did you get it, part #?

I know some other people would love to do this upgrade.

I too use the Fumoto Oil Drain Valve with a nipple. I also have a TJ 2000 with a SkidRow Skid Plate. With the nipple I add on a small plastic tube that will fit tightly on the nipple then run the tube down the hole through the skidplate & onto a oil pan. Then flip the valve to open then Magic...It drains very nicely onto the oil pan without no mess. When it drains very well I just close the valve & pull the hose off. With the nipple closed I insert a thick nail though the nipple so no kinds of mud or dirt will get stuck inside the nipple. Changing the filter is a different story thats messy & does drain onto the skid plate. Whats best is to use plastic gloves then add a few paper towels tucked the filter & slowly turn the filter. When you slowly turn your filter oil will drip onto the paper towels thats tucked under the filter. 20% of the oil will get on the paper towel & slowly take off the filter. It will still be a bit messy but not that much as before.
Fumoto Oil Drain Valve is great investment & awesome mod for my jeep when I want to change my oil quickly & easy. Anyone with a skid plate thats covering your oil pan this is a Must item to get. Saves you time & also makes it fun to change your oil. I love changing my oil now with is Fumoto Oil Drain Valve!!!

You need 3/8" ID Tubing to attach to the nipple
