Front and Rear Diff. fluid change question...

I just got back from getting the routine oil change/tire rotation. The guy there said that Jeep recommends a front/rear diff. change every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. I'm not saying this is wrong, because honestly I don't know. My Jeep has 17,400 miles or so, so I got them changed. I know it didn't hurt, but I wanted to see if maybe this guy was feeding me some BS to make about 70 more bucks...

Just to add... I have only had my Jeep a year and a half (bought it brand new so I know its been taken care of) and I have not yet taken it offroad at all. Didn't know if this would help with some answers for some of you.

Unless its been offroad,I wouldn't change it.The factory manual, does not give a time or milage if you run it on the street only. Many vechs. run there entire life wilth out being changed. My son-inlaws jeep has 100k on it and its still running on the original.

The guy is correct, every 12,000 miles.

As far as $70... you can buy the fluid for around $10 an axle and do it yourself in the future.

I agree with fitzz47. If you havn't gone off-roading there is no reason to do it every 12,000 miles unless you like wasting time and money. I also know a guy who went over 100k never changing it, but I would do it at 30k just to be on the safe side.

I'd like a few more opinions since these are mixed. I want to take care of my Jeep, but I don't want to overdo it if its not needed.

Read your owners manual, make your choice on the way you drive.I'm going to do mine at 30k like shaggy suggests. It never hurts to change it.

I just follow the maintenance schedule.

Surely if you never drove through deep water, you can go the Jeep's lifetime without changing. But at just ~$25 total to do it every 12,000 miles... you can't go wrong. Plus it is quality time with the Jeep. Don't pay $70 to have it done.

From 1998 TJ Factory Service Manual:

Sch A (normal driving) FSM doesn't mention changing it

Sch B (frequent start and stop, offroading, high speed and heat, towing) change every 12,000 mi
