Fram Disposable Air Filter (Same Part Number Different Filter)

I was at wal mart a few days ago and found the part number for the fram air filters for Jeep. I have been looking into replacing my K&N since its letting the dusty air of Colorado into my engine. When I found the Fram filter there were six filters sitting on the shelf. Three of them in a smaller box and three of them in a slighty larger box. I opened up both boxes, mind you they are the same part number and lo and behold the larger box had a FOAM element and the smaller did not.

Did Fram make two different kinds of filters for the Jeep? One for dusty conditions one for the street. Oh and yeah it was not the Air hog type both filters were 11 bucks.

So whats the deal? Any one have any knowledge of the product. At any rate I am going to buy the one with the foam filter attached cause Colorado is the dustiest place in the world.

Peace.

The OE filter has a foam element on the bottom too, probably just helps it to filter better which is a good thing in my book.

When I replaced the stock filter it did not have a foam element. It was just paper.

Jeep must have changed them, I do remember my'97's OE filter having sticky foam on one side. I only remember because I couldn't find replacement paper filters with the same sticky foam like I wanted.

I was wondering about this. I replaced a mopar filter on my last road trip with one I got from a local auto store. The original almost seemed to have an oil-impregnated layer on the bottom where-as the new one was dry. Definitely gave me pause.

I just looked inside some FRAM boxes, 2 different sized boxes, one large one small, both had the same part number, and inside both had the same filter without foam. Apparently FRAM still had a lot of big boxes left over to get rid of after they stopped making the version with the foam element.

I just went to wal mart and bought the last foam fram air filter they had the rest were just paper. I think I bought the last one. If I had known they were going to quit making them I would have bought the three they had last week. Now I have to find another with the foam.

Purolator quit making them with the extra piece on them as well. Last time I changed mine, I went through a local parts guy who sold Hastings filters, and those do have the foam piece. But they aren't as cheap as something from Walmart or a discount parts store.
