hey guys, ive got a 4.0 with 3.73's and 35 inch tires. its time to regear for sure but people tell me not to waste money on weak dana 35 and dana 30. i want 4.88 gears and someone told me to swap a ford 8.8 in for the dana 35. is that a good idea?? have many people done this? what other swaps can be done? thanks!

Absolutely a good idea. Dana 35s are not good axles to build. 8.8's have a much stronger ring and pinion. I'm actually collecting parts for an HP30 / 8.8 swap now.

The 8.8 and cherokee hp30 are a real good setup for 35s.

Second on those. East Coast Gear Supply builds both for TJs, in whatever gear/shaft/locker/ect combo you want.

X2 - They built my HPD30/Ford 8.8 with 4.88s and I couldn't be happier. Great company.

I been looking into this a ton lately.
Best setups for 35's are D44/D44, D30/D44, D30/8.8.
You can get the 8.8 from a 95+ Ford Explorer, and a high pinion Dana 30 from a 92-00 Cherokee.

I've got a HP30 and 8.8 combo. Once I get metalcloaks, I'll be going to 35s with no worries.

I have an 8.8 with 4.88s in mine with welded spider gears and beat it to death and still going strong deff would recommend the 8.8

@afusco1222 i have metalcloaks and im only in highschool. built my whole jeep from stock with blown motor, now one of the most capable jeeps in cleveland. im gonna do the 8.8 in the rear and gonna try to find a dana 44 out of the front of a rubicon for my front. and then throw in some 4.88's. i think that will make me happy

Good luck finding a rubi 44 for any reasonable money

I was thinking that too. Buying Metalcloaks before doing axles?
My axles will be locked with chromolys before the rig gets Cloaks

Yah when I think about my next purchases, I think back to my most recent wheeling trips and think what held me back or hindered performance the most. The d35 was on top of that list for a while. Next for me is control arms and brakes

Wouldnt a HP30 be stronger than a Rubi D44 anyway due to the way the pinion meets the ring gear? lol

Agree 100000%. Top of my list was the D35 and Stock shovel/lowering kit. Thats why I'm going 8.8 with truss and Savvy Under Armor.
