Folding Tailgate??? Is it possible?

I’ve searched for any threads that might pertain to this but haven’t found any that apply and my curiosity has got the best of me. I have been wondering if anyone has converted their tailgate from the swing open style to a fold down like on a truck bed. I am sure anyone that has ever been camping or to a bonfire has wished they could pull their jeep up to the fire and fold down the tailgate and sit by the fire. So, has anyone ever done this or do you think it would be possible to convert your swing tailgate to a folding tailgate. My curiosity just got the best of me would love to hear others opinions and ideas.

Thanks,

Tim

THATS AN AWESOME IDEA! As long as u have a swing out tire carrier or no spare. I think i might attempt that in the spring now that i think about it.

Are the CJ tailgates dimensionally the same as a TJ? How does the latching system work to keep the door closed?

A few months back I believe JP Magazine did an article on doing exactly what you want to do.

I've been contemplating how to do a fold-down tailgate on my TJ... but I want to find a way to set it up with stock style bearclaw latches hooked to a single handle outside... maybe even the stock handle.

Surely with all your jeeps and wealth of knowledge on the subject, you could show us a write-up or share some more info
