Fog Lights on without switch on & won't turn off
Stock 2004 Rubicon. This is a huge pain in the ***. They are off now because the Left Blink is "on" with the jeep off. The fogs stay on with the switch in the off position. If i put pressure on the switch (down on towards the steering wheel) they stay off. I figured there would be a lone fuse for the fog lights, but I believe they are included with the blinkers, so i could bypass it w/o worrying about leaving the blinker "on". I have no idea why this would happen. Is this an easy fix? I don't know anything about wiring... How would I go about removing that arm?

Pull the fog light relay as a temporary fix to keep them off until you figure out what the problem is. The relay is in the junction box under the hood. Sounds like you've got a problem with the switch.

Can you tell me which relay it would be? I know where the box is - next to the air box, in front of the battery, but when I get under there - which one do I pull?

Nevermind - found it. When you lift the junction box lid, it shows which relay is which. Thanks a lot.

only 3 things could be happening, the first 2 most likely:
1) Switch is busted 2) Relay is sticking on the "on" position (replace) 3) wires are shorting hopefully im not having a brain fart and missing anything

Thats funny I just ordered a new multifunction switch for the same exact prob. I was at work on friday and one of my coworkers came in and said my fog lights were on. I went out and the switch was off but the lights were on, I also pulled relay. If you search on the internet you'll see there is a real problem with the fog light switch on the end of the multifunction switch wearing and finally shorting out internally. I did notice that for the last few months when I used the directional the fog light indicator on the dash would flicker. So I had some warning but didn't really pay attention. Really you have two options either wire up the fog lights to a different toggle switch, or do what I did and order a new one. FYI the switch goes for about $100.

LOL, I had this problem for the longest time and just fixed it a month ago. I ordered a factory toggle switch (the old style fog light switch) on ebay, $5. I located the the wire coming from the column switch to the relay, cut it at the fuse box, soldered a new wire up to the snipped wire running into the relay then wired up the new switch. It was not very hard and all the functions still work the same as if you were using the steering column switch ie the gauge cluster fog light indicator still illuminates. If you would prefer to go this route to remedy the problem pm me and I will go out and find the exact wire you should cut and splice into as well as give you step by step on how I did it.
That steering column switch is crap and I personally would not spend 100 bucks to replace it, most likely will happen again if it were to get wet. |

I just replaced my combination switch for the exact same problem. My fog lights would flicker when the turn signal cancelled or when I messed with the dimmer. Switch was $65.

It's not your relay or your wiring... its the damned MFS (Multi-Function Switch) that they put in the later model TJs. I have this same problem and all I did was pull the relay to break the circuit. I haven't used my fog lights in about 3 years now but I've been too cheap to dish out the cash for a replacement switch.

To be honest - I hate the whole set-up with the toggle switch. I miss the old 97-02 Headlight Switch that was on under and to the left of the steering wheel. Pull out to turn the head lights on and turn left to turn interiors on. Sucks that I have to replace the whole toggle switch. I'm sure I won't pass inspection with the lights not turning on. Thanks for the replies.

The switch is just of poor quality. Your symptoms match the problem... even though I overloaded the switch a little differently.

oujeepin, tried to PM you but your inbox is full,
My stalk just quit on me and I would love to replace it with an isolated switch. I think it's a better system then the pull out the tip thing that jeep had going. But, anything is better then opening my hood and replacing the relay on foggy mornings. |
