Fog light sensitivity, turn signal trouble and a mysterious beep

The fog lights in my 02 sahara are controlled by a switch that you slide out from the main light lever. Anyway, they turn on every time the lever is touched even the slightest. I dont know what is wrong

My right blinker started blinking fast, so i thought on of my bulbs were out. But all of my lights work and one of them does not flash with the blinkers, so the car thinks the bulb is out. And when i turn on my headlights, the right signal on my dashboard is lit up. What could be the problem?

After driving for a while, i will hear an emergency beep from the dashboard but no lights are flashing or lighting up. Its just a beep. I dont know what is causing it.

Any suggestions you guys have would be greatly apprecieated.

I had a similar problem last year with my fog lights. The only way I could be sure they would stay off, when the ignition was off, was by putting turn signal in the "turn right" position. I ended up replacing the entire "multi-function light switch". A $125 I would have rather used for something else...

Definantly sounds like it could be something with the multi function switch.

Just my opinion.. but have you added any leds recently? They tend to blink at a different rate & cause that increased blink speed - or, A bulb may be getting ready to go - Ive had that...
as for the strange beeping.. I know in my 01, if I leave a turn signal on longer than 1 mile - I get a warning/reminder beep.

I'm no electrical guru but I'd look into it befor dropping 100+ on any new modules... just my 2 cents

^ Worth looking into. The only reason I said maybe MFS was the note about touching it and fog lites coming on.

Your self-illuminating foglights are indeed due to a malfunctioning Multifunction Switch. It's a part that commonly fails; a forum search indicated Chrysler used the same switch on PT Cruisers, and fails on those too. How do I know this? I just came inside from replacing/bypassing my MF switch on my 2002 Sahara tonight.

As commented above, leaving the turn signal in the "left"/down position -- or perhaps 'right'/up, as described above -- will prevent your fog lights from lighting up when you're away from your car (and yes, they *will* do that if the short in the switch gets progressively worse), and draining your battery. That's a stop-gap fix though, as nobody wants to see your foglights flicker on and off as you're driving down the road. ;-)

A permanent fix would be to replace the $125 switch. An alternative to that costly endeavor (why replace an expensive failure-prone part with the same expensive failure-prone part?) would be to re-wire the switch to a factory Jeep foglight switch in one of the three slots above the cigarette lighter -- some years TJ's had a foglight switch there, next to the hardtop washer and defroster switchs. I've seen them on ebay, and you could probably find one at a pick-and-pull or order one from the stealership. Personally, I chose an even cheaper alternative: I wired the lights to a $3.99 toggle switch I mounted near my other matching $3.99 auxilery light switches.

If you choose to bypass the turn signal stalk by using one of the alternative switches described above, simply undo the two halves of steering column shroud by unscrewing the two deeply set Phillips screws underneath. Slide the bottom half of the cover off first, and then the top. On top (not the side) of the steering column, there is a grey connector with about 20 wires in it... disconnect it. There is a black piece along the front and sides of that grey connecter, pull it off. At that point, you can pull individual wires out. Pull out the white wire with an orange stripe; that white/orange wire leads to your foglight relay. Replace the black piece on to the front of the grey connecter. Using a factory or aftermarket toggle switch of your choice, hook that wire (you'll almost certainly need an extension) to one terminal. On the other terminal, hook up a "battery on" accessory wire (eg, cigarette lighter power wire, red radio wire). Replace all connecters and reassemble the plastic steering column clamshell.

By using this orange/white wire, you'll maintain use of your factory wiring and relay, and the green foglight indicator will still illuminate when you use the toggle switch. Doing this will also allow you to check the conditions and connections of the other (turn signal) wires while you have things disassembled.

Best of luck with however you chose to proceed.

Multifunction switch is bad. Beeping is because turn signal is left on, or at least it thinks it's on.

Hey there, new to the forum. i had a similar problem on my 2002 TJ sport. fast blinker, dash indicator, and the annoying beep. turns out the front body mount bolt was missing, replaced the bolt, all problems corrected. so i would assume that it was a body to frame ground issue. just another suggestion.

For posterity on my 2005 Unlimited Rubicon it was the white with yellow tracer wire in the grey harness, located at position 14.

Could you expand on that location and your problem a little please.

Thanks.

i just replaced the multi function switch in my 04 with a supposed aftermarket part under the brand name airtex which i ordered from rockauto.com to my surprise when i pulled the part from the box it looks identical to my factory part, so its either factory or a refurb. best part is it only cost about $60. and finally no more phantom fog lights

I am having this same exact problem on my 2002 sport but mine is just fog light sensitivity. I went to autozone and they said the part would be $51.99. why such a range of prices on this part?

I like the idea of moving the fog light switch though so I dont know what I should do. I guess ordering the part would be the best thing to do.

Using this wire, will the lights now only get power when the key is on, just like the radio and cigarette lighter?
What kind of wire could you connect it to, in order to make it turn on when the kwy is still off?

Just wanted to post that I had the same problem as the original poster and went to AutoZone and ordered the part, it came in 2 days later and I replaced the multiswitch. Took about 20 minutes and it now works perfect, no more fog lights turning on by themselves!

it was $51.99 for the multiswitch and is identical.
