Flare Trimming 101
My flares rub a bit and it doesn't do any harm, but it's kind of irritating. That, and I just can't leave things alone
![]() This is a very easy mod and I've seen some other write-ups - but not one with pictures. My plan was to trim 3/4" and maintain the stock lines. Step one: Mark the flare. I used a compass and ran the metal point along the flare edge. ![]() ![]() Step two: Score the flare with a box cutter or exacto knife. I used about 3 passes. The first pass is very light and then progressively deeper on subsequent passes. You can fold the edge of the flare on the third pass to open it up a bit. Be careful! ![]() Step three: Cut the bottom of the flare all the way through. You just need to get it cut about 1-2". ![]() Step four: Continue the final cut while pulling out and down on the piece you're cutting off. I only have 2 hands, so I couldn't hold the parts while taking this picture. ![]() Step five: I dressed up the edges with a sanding sponge. I will probably paint the flares again since the Krylon was flaking off where I cut. It's been about 3.5 years since I painted them. Then again, I might just leave them be. Before: ![]() After: ![]() Did I mention to be careful? I did this while trimming up a tiny piece that nobody would ever see I just can't leave it alone ![]() ![]() Happy Jeepin'. Now I'm all ready to beat on this thing tomorrow

Sweet writeup. You went pretty easy. I believe I took over a few inches off of mine, right up to where it begins to curve.

Well done. I have an extra set of flares and this might just be a good project for them. Good write up too.

Nice, clean work (oops on the finger). The step-by-step on the pics is great!

Did you sand that down or just leave it?

I sanded the edge where it was cut. I just knocked the edges down.
I think what makes it most notable is the lighter edge. What appears to be a grayish/white line is actually the faded color of the flare where the Krylon flaked off. I painted the flares years ago. |

Nice write-up. I did this a few months ago. However, after I marked it, I used a plastic cutting wheel on my Dremel instead of the utility knife. I can't typically make deep enough cuts with a utility knife and keep it on track.
