This is a great write-up...gonna have to try it. This weekend all of my guages, my stereo, and my ability to turn on my 'dome lights' all went on the fritz. There appears to be a short somewhere. Think this might take care of the problem???

Well, I tried this and it didn't work . I did get to clean a lot of dirt/dust from some pretty deep places in there, but even with the instrument panel pulled, the fuse in the Power Distribution Center still blows immediately upon contact. Don't know...may have to take it to a professional...

Do you know of any way to test the cluster before putting it back in? All the needles in mine are dead, I don't know if it is the wires or the cluster.

Another thing to add...

Put a little dielectric greese in the connections. This will help keep this from happening again.

I did this to mine last weekend, and haven't had the dead gauges since.

I did get my guages fixed. Found the cause of the problem, almost by accident! It's not a great picture, but you can see where the wires had rubbed through and were shorting out (long story). It's right about where the wire turns up to go under the roll bar padding.

My mechanic swears he's done this procedure twice on my 99. Unfort, the gauges are still playing, dead, ok, dead, ok...and so on.

Says it has to go back to the dealer, of which I know is going to be $$$$, even though there is a TSB out on this.

Any other ideas???

Anyone heard of this problem being intermittent? I know my gauges go dead while I'm driving but then they come back on when I smack the top of the dash lol

yes, mine was intermittent. I smacked the dash too for a while to get them back on. Once I twisted the pins a little, it went away. That was over year ago now. A little dielectric grease helps too.
