First time owner, long time "envy'er"

Hello I just recently made a great deal on a 2006 Wranlger, Rubicon Unlimited. It's manual with 4 wheel drive along with the axle lock option and a few others like dual top. There was a thread in another forum I am apart of where it delt with the commute to work and I posted my new Jeep and it's gas milage. Well later on someone replied back who has a Dodge and is in to Mopar mods and he mentioned a few things I could do to increase the gas milage.

He also directed me to this forum which is pretty awesome considering how long I have wanted a wrangler and now finally have one to play with. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on synthetic fluids and performance intake breathers that gave a better rate for mileage. The guy I was talking with mentioned he had the same fuel rate (14c -18hwy) and he did a few adjustment and got it to 18/22.

I wanted to say thanks in advance to whoever made this site, it's pretty awesome indeed and I hope to soak up tips from you elders so please pardon me if I ask some really dumb questions. I read the FAQ's and saw the links, I will go through them in due time to read alot of the stuff that was posted, note to the mods though, a few links have http://http:// so the pages dont come up right.

By the way here's my Jeep,

I hope to enjoy my stay here, I'm still grinnin' at the cocaine in the fender joke a few threads down.

First I found the formula for aerodynamic drag. Which is:

F(d) = -.5pv(^2)AC(d)

Where

F(d) = Force of drag in Newtons
p = density of air in kg/m(^3)
v = velocity of the object in m/s
A = Area of the face of the object
C(d) = drag coefficient (typically determined experimentally)

I determined the density of air and the velocity would be constants

p = 1.168 kg/m(^3) (which I found here)
v = 65 mph or 29.0576 m/s (using this conversion calculator)

Then I needed to determine the Area of the front of a TJ as well as its drag coefficient. Luckily, I found both here.
A(Jeep) = 2.58 m(^2)
C(d)(Jeep) = .58

For the brick, I realized I needed to scale things up considering a standard brick is much much smaller than a TJ. I compared the width of the TJ to that of the brick and used that as the scale and simply multiplied from there. So...

A(Brick) = .965 m(^2)
C(d)(Brick) = 2.1 (found here)

So after that it was just some simple multiplication.

F(d)(Jeep) = -.5(1.168)(29.0576^2)(2.58)(.58)
F(d)(Jeep) = -631.738 Newtons (at 65 mph)

F(d)(Brick) = -.5(1.168)(29.0576^2)(.965)(2.1)
F(d)(Brick) = -999.261 Newtons (at 65 mph)

So... technically, a TJ is a more efficient than a brick, but not by much. So while, there is obviously some exaggeration in saying the TJ is a brick with wheels, it's not that far off.

welcome aboard

that is a sharp looking Rubi... most people take off the milk jugs on the end of the bumpers, and some have bought replacement end caps from the dealers to make it look more clean...until you get aftermarket ones...

as far as mileage goes, I'm sorry but it really is hard to increase the wrangler's mpg....people have tried throttle body spacers, cold air intakes, and all but tjhe end results are just not worthy....

oooo that's pretty. they look so nice before you take them off the road.
JP magazine did a write up about bolt on HP and MPG mods, and it ended up being something ridiculous amount of money/ each HP gain. the stroker guys report better milage. make your 4.0 a 4.7

Nice looking TJ there, love the black on black.

As far as MPG goes, from experience with performance parts on other vehicles, most don't increase the fuel economy, at least not enough to make it worth while.

But I'll know your pain in about a month give or take a couple of days shipping time, just finished up the paperwork on the soft top A4 version of that Jeep at Huffines.

Thanks for the comments guys, I know its not a high rise as the ones I have seen but I love it so far! I wasn't really worried about the mileage, I simply told the wife I was in "pre-midlife crisis" and had to have it. I traded in my 03 Liberty on it and the wife was worried my dog wouldn't fit in it because he's an 140 summer/180lb in the winter Akita. But he hopped in through the front seat just fine.

I will take your advice though, I figured it wouldn't be worth it to invest in anything as of yet, until I bust my cherry and get my toes muddy and then start looking into mods like intake and such. I am taking it on a endurance trip to Alanta from Dallas and back for the weekend, the wife and I are going to the worlds largest aquarium. I told the wife all I need is a snorkel, but she said I can't swim with the fishy's, and I replied, I meant for the Jeep and of course insert rolling of eyes here.

Thanks again guys see you when I get back.

Very nice TJ. If I had it to do over, I'd consider the Rubi Unlimited a lot more then I did. Enjoy it.

Another thing to consider is that if Jeep could do something to increase mileage, they would. Because people want that right now.
