to tell if the springs are bad take it over some speed bumps not fast just the normal speed, if the rear hits the bump stops with nothing in the back then your springs are baked, for a 2004 they should not be that bad but if you can jump up and down on the bumpers and theres a lot of travel then dont buy spacers it will not help you will be wasting money rusty have a 2-3" kit with springs and shocks for a good price here is the links:

no the springs are fine turns out. they still have lost of travel and are good and firm. the bumper just took up the "slack" so to speak. i have hit speed bumps pretty hard in the last few days and im not close not bottoming out. thanks for the info though and the link.
