Finding the right TJ

I'm currently shopping for a used TJ. I definitely want one with D44 and at least 3.73's. What is the easiest way to identify this combination while I'm crusing the used market? As you can imagine, when I ask a salesmen if a particular Jeep has such a set-up, they are clueless.

Start with at least looking for a Sport model. Sports, Saharas, and Rubicons come with or have the option of the Dana 44. It may be a option on the X package as well but I'm not sure.

Take a look, If the Axle is oval with a rubber plug it is a Dana 35. If it looks like a pear and has a steel drain plug it is a Dana 44. As far a gears, ask the salesman to contact Chrysler for a build sheet. You may also be able to determine if there is a LSD installed.

Getting under the Jeep and taking a look is your best bet. Also, if it has a D44 then it will have 3.73 gears (unless its a Rubi).

Not necessarily.

A D44 can be had with 3.07 gears too.

Call Jeep customer service, 1-800-992-1997. I gave them 3+ vin numbers and asked them to tell me the axle/axle ratio on each. They had no problem doing that at all. They seemed glad to help. They did ask for the mileage of the jeep they were looking up.
