Exhaust Leak Question

Ok Guys heres a good one for you. I have a 99 wrangler se as you will see in my signature. Anyway I have a ticking noise (obvious exhaust leak). You can see the leak coming from where the manifold flanges into the exhaust pipe. Now you can tell me its a donught gasket if you want but if you look at a 4cyl jeep and take it apart you will notice that there isn't a gasket at all. However weird and or unbelieveable this may sound it is true. My uncle a service manager at a ford dealership confirmed this. He suggested that I take it to an exhaust shop and have them fix it to to make it easier. My question is could I not just buy a liquid exhaust gasket compund and put it in where the manifold flanges to the pipe? That would stop the leak right? Or should I try and find an impact wrench and tighten it as much as possible and hope that works?

4 cyl TJ's often break their outer exhaust manifold studs, are you sure your's isn't broken or completely missing? Up here in the great white north, the warranty was extended to 8 years for just this thing. I had mine replaced under warranty last year.

As for an impact....uhhhh No. For SURE you'll break it then

I have a 02 SE and had a rattle noise that the dealership traced to the same flange bolts being loose. Tightening the bolts fixed the probelm, but temporarily. A few months later and guess what...the rattle sound is back, but I get it at a lower speed/engine rpm. I plan on letting the dealership handle it again as I'm still under warranty.

Concur with not using an impact wrench in fear of snapping or stripping the bolts.

That is basically what mine does. It is only bad at lower rpm's I am assuming because at higher rpms the exhaust is moving fast enough that it doesn't leak due to the pressure pushing it out.
