Engine Swap

I was just curious if anyone had done the 4.7 or 5.2 Cherokee V8 swap into a TJ ('99).
If so what were some of the changes you had to make? Also, would the AX-15(standard) hold up to the V8 well?
OR
Just any good V8 (I really want to do a diesel swap) or other motor swap.

I swapped a 4.7 V8 from a WJ in to my TJ. It was a PITA.

If I were to do it over, I'd go with a Ford 5.0 or a Dodge 5.9 because those are easier swaps.

The AX-15 will not bolt up to the 4.7 V8. It will bolt up to the 5.2/5.9 with a Dodge Dakota bellhousing.

When doing a motor swap, here are the issues you need to address:

Radiator
Radiator hoses
Cooling fan
Motor mounts
Wiring
Gauges
Linkage (throttle, t-case, and possibly transmission)
Transmission cross member (if swapping transmission)
Driveshafts
Exhaust

I'm sure there are more, but that is what comes to mind at the moment.

I'm doing the 5.0 HO mustang swap right now, if I hadn't already had the 5.0 for several years calling to me, I would have done the 5.2/5.7 dodge swap, it easier - no advanced adapters kit, and the wireing/sensors are almost the same. the 5.0 ford is definately the next easiest thanks to the stand alone mustang fuel injection system, and the commonality of aftermarket support. I'm not including carbed engine, carbs don't belong in jeeps IMO

So true. I think that I am going to start preparing to do the 5.2 from a Cherokee. I can get 3 different Cherokee's near where I live for $1000, so then if I need extra parts for the motor I can just pick up another one. They are all around '99 too so that's a bonus

'99 was the first year for the 4.7 V8 in Grand Cherokees.

You'd have to source a '98 or older to get the 5.2, at least if you're pulling it from a Grand. There were other models in '99 that still had the 5.2.

I used a 5.2 from a 98 Ram pickup. Advance Adapter motor mounts put the 5.2 and 46re auto in just the right spot for stock driveshafts. Front half of the Ram exhaust with rear of TJ exhaust with a little tweaking. Dakota air bonnet and hose with stock TJ air filter box. Ram power steering pump and pressure hose and TJ return hose. Right now I have an NV3500 5 speed from a 96 Ram but liked the auto better and am changing it back. Stock skid and made a trans mount from half the Ram one and half the TJ mount. Used a shifter and cable from an XJ, $10 from pick a part. Throttle cable from Ram fit perfect.

Get the FSMs for both the TJ and the donor vehicle and it's pretty easy to do the harness yourself. I'm still using the stock 4 cyl rad. No cooling issues yet, even in 45C in the desert last summer....

Also, I did this swap in one long weekend. Sold the 4 banger and trans and am up a little cash

That craddle looks like it would fit the stock TJ AC compressor! That would be another bonus

Did you have to change the transfer case or have you had any problems?

Used the stock 231, no problems at all. I did add a wide chain to it later on, not because of a problem, just because I had it. The 44/46RE with advance adapter mounts puts the transfer case in the stock position. The stock driveshafts seem to be just fine so far. I swapped in an 1996 NV3500 5 speed which is 3/4 of an inch shorter than the 46RE. I just slid the engine back in the mounts and it fit fine. I've been driving it with the 5.2 for more than a year now....works great.
