Engine sputtering when driving

I have a 99 TJ sahara with the 4.0 and when I drive, everything thing is fine then after I shift into 3rd and give it gas it will start to sputter like it's running out of gas then about 2 minutes of fighting it to stay alive it acts like nothing ever happened. (it also does this in 4th and 5th.) Then just recently before it did this the check engine light came on. I'm wondering what this is and how I can fix it.

have you checked what the check engine codes are?

Use this to check, Jeep TJ Diagnostic Codes

Post back the code(s) this should allow people to better diagnose the problem.
