Ok...I went at the motor with a stethoscope. The front of the transmission was making the clanging sound as well as the second port (from the front) on the manifold. When I listened to the manifold it really sounded like a diesel. The lower part of the motor all sounded the same and fairly quite as well as the top end. I'll have someone more experienced take a listen and see what they say.

Hey Flesh, Do you feel confident to remove the pan? Honestly, removing the exhaust manifold is by far the worst of it. If you drop the pan, you can take a peek at the rod bearings one at a time. You will need a torque wrench and a new pan gasket, a couple of standard size rod bearings, and a couple of .001 undersize rod bearings. Total cost of project should be under $50, and the longer you wait, the more damage to the crank journal.
This also gives you access to the timing chain for inspection. They make noise when getting slop/stretch.

Update:
Got the ole girl back together, and started up. Most definately runs quieter. I eliminated the worst of the ticking, but admit that there is still some noises that indicate this engine was abused at some previous time. Very driveable now, and it doesn't worry me like it was before the new #6 rod bearing.

Honestly my motor doesn't sound anything like the video the other user posted. I think I'll wait this one out...I think it's more exhaust than engine; in the freezing cold there is no noise and after driving in the heat the noise is very, very minimal. If it gets worse as the year goes by I'll definitely drop the pan and check it out. You have to listen very closely for this noise so I'm not overly worried yet...if it sounded as loud as the video I'd be under it today!

I had a friend listen to the Jeep and he didn't really notice anything. I'm not even sure if was hearing the same thing I was ha-ha! But he did say that if I want to replace the bearings it's an easy job that we can tackle...so possibly this fall we'll be doing that when the weather isn't miserable. Since it's a cheap fix might as well see if it quiets the old girl down some.

Pre-cats are most likely rattling around, very common.

Hoppy1962. Your engine sounds like it has a bad lifter.
Rod knock is gonna have a deeper tone to it. Also a rod knock doesn't go away.

Mine hasn't gotten any worse and it just handled a 5 hour drive (each way) quite nicely. Oil pressure is perfect so I'm just going to wait this out...didn't get around to listening to the pre cats yet.
