I think I dare to add to this thread (flame retardant suit is on)...

I just installed new EBC 7000 Green pads on my 01 TJ last night, I turned the rotors as well. I had a lot of fun at 1am doing the hard stops to brake in the brakes. Everything seemed to go great, except that today I am getting a squeeling from my brakes with moderate brake pedal pressure. If I jam on the brakes no squeeling/squeeking. Yes, I put brake lube all the places I was supposed to. I read in another threat that I should sand paper down the rotors and pads? But this doesnt make sense to me. I just did this last night, so is there some break in time to stop making noise or did I screw something up?

ps. braking is AMAZING now. Locking up the tires is easy, plenty of stopping on 33's with this setup. I can't imagine what a Vanco setup can do.

Out of curiosity, is the break-in any different than any other pads?
I can't help but wonder if there isn't some amount of compatability between rotor material and pad material.

I also can't believe that someone
threatened
you to use sandpaper on the rotors. Seems you would have to do it constantly. Unless, maybe the rotors got glazed?

The green pads start out quiet, break in slightly and then squeal, groan, and growl at different points until you get anywhere from 4-800 miles on them.

Who told you to do hard stops to break them in?

My Yellows should be arriving today, I'm going to put them on when I do my Aussie locker install since I have to remove the calipers anyways.

Just so I know in advance, what is the proper break-in technique to assure proper pad seating??

Last time I looked the rotors looked properly worn, do I need to do anything to them? Or should I be able to the just throw the pads on?

Personally -I lean towards... new pads, new rotors. Unless you can't afford it.

Really? Why would I need new Rotors? They're made of the same thing, prefectly worn in, and the ones I have have plenty of life left, there's no doubt I can afford them but I think it would be a waste of money, at very worst I should be able to turn them.

The only reason I think new rotors would be needed is if they were worn below or near the replacement spec, or even severly warped. In most cases you can just throw pads on a properly worn rotor, I've done it several times on several vehicles without consequences. However, these are a Kevlar pad (the Yellow ones) and I was asking because people have mentioned sandpaper and turning them prior to install.

I saw the break in procedure on Stu's website, 10 stops from about 45 mph (without full stop), cool, repeat. They were quiet at first, so maybe now I'm in the second 4-500 mile period where they "wear" in or whatever they do, I don't know the right terminology.

The sandpaper idea was on here, I used the SEARCH function before I asked the question, but didn't like what I found...

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/squeeky-brakes-284784/?highlight=brakes+sandpaper

Anyway, braking is great now.

To my way of thinking, new rotors are only needed if the old rotors are worn past the point they can't be turned smooth and stay within specs. Throwing out a set of rotors just because you're installing new pads makes zero sense to me. Why more than double the cost of a brake job just because you can if it's not needed:

Well, when I get my green pads, rest assured I'll be putting new rotors on also. That'll be about one year on the current setup ~16000 km. I'm going to wait for a hint on the (top) most recommended brand rotor at the time.
Hi Jerry!

The EBC come with a break in material so you dont have such an immediate break procedure. EBC's website tells you how to break them in.
http://www.ebcbrakes.com/assets/typicalq%26a.html
Quote:
9. Bedding in EBC pads
In Street use situations …
Bedding in when the red EBC surface coating (marked on the pads as Brake In) is applied.
Best procedure is to drive gently avoiding harsh braking unless in an emergency for first 100 miles. In the second 100 miles (up to 200) you can use gently increasing brake pressures when using the brakes.
Only after 200 miles urban driving (not 200 miles on a freeway where brakes are almost unused) should you attempt to apply heavy load and heat to the brakes. To do this final bedding on a QUIET ROAD in safe traffic apply the brakes and slow from 60 to 10 MPH five times in a row. Then drive slowly for a few minutes if safe to do so to allow the brakes to cool. Try to avoid coming to a rest whilst the brakes are heated.
A smell may be noticed from the warm brakes, this is normal. Repeat this procedure a second time after the brakes have TOTALLY cooled down. EBC pads get better with miles. Even after this bed in procedure it can take up to 1500 miles before the pads are at their best. In the meantime the pads will be good and safe but true potential not realised. EBC makes performance pads that last, they do not bed in within 5 minutes driving. Noises will be more likely during the first 1000-1500 miles use whilst this chemical bedding takes place.

Ok, so I installed my EBC Yellowstuff pads yesterday when I was putting everything back together after my Aussie install, which went very smoothly. The pads are awesome, I could easily lock up my 33's without too much effort, the only problem I'm having so far is they started making one hell of a screaching sound after the break in material wore off, but I'll check that out today. The breaking is night-and-day!

But I just wanted to let everyone know, over all, these pads are awesome, and a great upgrade for those who aren't quite ready to upgrade the whole set-up yet. It's a very well spent $115, the breaking is much more consistant, when I put my foot on the pedal it doesn't require added pressure as you come closer to a stop, the pads just do the work for you, as they get hotter they actually break more ubruptly.

These get my "highly recommended" stamp!
