dropping busted tranny

okay i need an extensive detailed list of things i need to do to replace/fix my tranny. i have a 98 sahara. and it wont go into second, and it is all loose through out the grears. accasionaly grinding. i have since stopped driving this car. and i plan on taking out the tranny to maybe see whats wrong.

my dad is very knowlegeable about mechanics but i need to know how to drop the tranny.

also what should i look for and what might be wrong? can i physicly replace gears and fix other parts with minimal tools?
most of all i just need to know how to get the tranny out. thanx alot guys.

Sounds like you are going to need new synchros which can be done by your advanced DIY'er but not by your average shadetree mechanic. Dropping the tranny is easy and fairly self explanatory when you get under it (I don't have a jeep with me at college so I can't give exact directions)
If you are afraid to replace your synchros any decent tranny shop should be able to do it for fairly cheap.

yea, well before we go to the shop my dad wants to look at it, just to make sure he knows whats wrong and what needs to be done.

is it cheaper to take in your trany and have them work on it, then u put it back yourself? or is it better to take the whole car?

the cheapest route would be to drop the tranny yourself and then take it into a tranny shop for a rebuild. that should save you a couple hundred dollars worth of labor.
