Driver or Passenger side rear view?

Hey I got a mirror from pep boys and rigged it up to fit on the door hinge. I'm pretty sure that legally you only need one side view mirror, but I'm getting mixed info on whether it's the driver side or passenger.

Logically i'd think it would be the driver side i need, since there's more obstruction of view.

Anybody know which one it is? I wanna take the doors off without being bothered by coppers!

the law is 2 mirrors.

Either the drivers side view with the rear view mirror or both side view mirrors.

That's not set in stone in all locations. It will vary from state to state and even from city to city in some states. The best advice is to research your local laws and go with either what is required or if the law doesn't have a requirement go with what you are comfortable with.

Show me a city or state that has a law that is different.

Look on a car lot...the cheap cars only have 1 side view mirror. look at a big truck/bus/van/motorcycle...no rear view. The laws are written dumb. In Virginia (and should apply to all states) there is a max tint on rear windows, but you can paint them and that is legal as long as you have 2 rearward facing mirrors.

It's Federal, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Thou it is possible that a state may require manufacturers to a higher standard (CA emmissions) but highly unlikely

After a little more research i found this PDF that declares what you need in order to pass inspection in CT.

Here's the part about mirrors:

MIRRORS - Two mirrors are required to adequately show the roadway to the rear of the vehicle. Mirrors shall be free of blemishes, untarnished and unbroken and shall have no defects that would prevent an adequate rear view of the highway. Mirrors shall be properly mounted and securely fastened to prevent excessive vibration.

I give the prize to dirtbag's first reply - before the thread got all complicated.
