Driveline Vibes

I recently installed a RC series 2 4 inch lift kit with all parts included the t case drop. The TJ has slight vibes starting at 35 and continuing until around 50 mph. All other speeds = no vibes. How many U- Joints do you think I will go through in a years time. I should clarify that it is a 97 TJ with 148k on it and was completely stock its entire life until about 1 week ago. It is not a DD now, at most I drive it 500-700 miles a month about 60% highway, the rest is off road.

You could add some thick washers to the Transfercase drop. That, temporary, might stop the vibes. There's a good chance that your lift will sag a bit here in the next few months, so it might work itself out doing nothing. I added a heavy rear bumper and a winch to my rig. The slight vibe I had in the 45mph range was gone.

i had this same lift put on my 98' when it had 135k miles on it. I had the same exact vibes even after new u-joints. The tranny ended up blowing out on me... whether to say that was due to the extra strain placed on the engine/driveline, i can't say... but I would look into a sye/cv driveshaft purchase. That's the only way to take care of the vibes. Wish I had done that prior to my experience... small price to pay for peace of mind...

I want to try to add some washers to it to lower it a little more, because like I said its not bad, but a vibe is still a vibe. It is the t-case drop kit that comes with the rc kit, the two bars that slide in over the skid plate. How and where would I add the washers to it, what all would be involved with this. Thanks.

i didn't install my lift, so i'm not exactly where to put the washers.. wish i could help you more, but my guess would be on the bolts that bolt the TC drop onto the TC? seems most logical in my opinion. Definitely let me know how it works out, because if i could get that lift again and settle the vibes for a reasonable price, i'll do it all over again...
good luck!

yea, i just lifted my 98 tj 4 inches, i get the same vibrations, i wish these kits were more honest about needing the SYE kit, it ought to come standard.

yeah seriously, tell me about it... what i do know, is if you order it from rough country on the phone, if you haggle with the sales people a bit, if you buy the lift with the sye/cv driveshaft, they'll give you 10% off the order.. pretty crappy, but it's better than nothing

put a jack with a block of wood under your t/case and jack it just enough to put pressure on.loosen all tcase mounting bolts. Then lower your jack just enough to slip the washers between your skid and frame. tighten up test drive and add more if necessary. I would save for a sye/ double cardan shaft if I was adding to a t/case drop.also a mml and bl might help your problem. About 175 from northridge or the sye combo with nth adj uca. Good luck man.

Another thing to look at is the balance of your tires. Typically tire vibrations start around 35 mph and can fade away at higher speeds. Depending on if the tires are new or used could be a factor too.

The tires are new, and were balanced and installed at the same time with the lift kit, I guess I will try to add a little more drop to the tcase and see if it works - i will also start saving for the sye/ds bc i know in the long run i will need it.

Go here and click the links about halfway down the page. This discusses driveline vibes as related to driveline alignment.

Ok, well the vibes are gone out of the Jeep, but the way that I had to get them out was a little unorthodox and I dont know how it will affect the Jeep - When I unbolted the skid plate, it did not fall all the way down because it is an auto and the transmission was holding up the skid plate in the front a little. So what I did was add two washers to the front two bolts, 3 washers to the 2nd two bolts and 5 washers on the back two. Which got rid of the vibes because the driveline angle was relieved from those 5 washers in the back. This is all in addition to the bars that are my t case drop. What this also did was tilt my skid plate trans case and trans a little to the back, will this cause any issues? - I also want to clarify that this is a band aid to fix the vibes until I purchase the SYE and CV driveshaft that I know is required.

Not knowing the thickness of your washers? Just be sure you have enough bolt screwed into the frame. Other than that, it'll ride until you get tired of looking at your band-aid, or the funds come available for the SYE conversion.
