Why I need a 5 gallon jerry can of gas is this... my usual desert wheeling areas are well away from the nearest gas stations so it's not often when I can get to my wheeling location with much more than maybe 2/3 of a tank at the very most. Then if I spend a day or two crawling the trails in 4Lo, that will just about empty the gas tank. Being in 4Lo and 1st or 2nd gear gives me something like 2-4 mpg at the most. I have often not had enough gas left to make it to the nearest gas station so that extra 5 gallons makes it much easier for those kinds of longer-distance trips.
Lol Thanks for that Jerry. Guess I'm up here where it seems like you can throw a rock and hit a gas station about anywhere. And Jerry, I'd love your feedback for the next portion I'm writing here.

So this brings me to my idea. First off all, lets face it, gasoline is dangerous stuff realistically (do you really think they'd allow it as fuel if we just created the combustion engine in this modern era with everyone so lawsuit happy), and is it smart to have it mounted on a rack above your head, or even ANYWHERE close to the seats? Asking because I had what I thought was a good idea otherwise. For those that don't have back seats, we could instead have a rack mounted above that location (just above tonneau lever) mounted to the roll bar. Properly set up, you could mount one of two cans on it and still have room leftover for the cooler (size permitting). I know some companies sell the racks, just haven't seen one set up for fuel cans. Would still raise the center of gravity, but it would minimize the amount of crap hanging off the vehicle.

here is mine, Matt from TNT customs built it in his garage loooong before there was a TNT customs:

here it is after repainting. The jerry can's bottom lip rides in the L channel on the bottom and the top secures down on a little bracket that uses a bolt/arms much like the swing away for the tire.

i normally don't have the tank on there unless it is empty or I am going on a trip...in which case, i never really take my eyes off my jeep anyway.

in the last picture you can see rack mounts on the tub...looks like the rack comes right off.

I'm running a Body Armor rear bumper...relatively low center of gravity sacrificing a little departure angle.

I hardly ever run the rack, unless I am camping. i normally don't take the top all the way off anyway - too much sun...i just remove the sides. It's down right now.

but to answer your question - no, i don't think you can put the top down with the rack all the way on...you can tilt the rack up (it hinges on the rear) and put the top down though.

A full metal gas can weighs around 50 pounds. That would be a bit much for the stock tire carrier, unless you leave your spare at home and carry fuel instead.

NATO cans

They are the best ones I have ever used. Cam closure with a great seal. Easy vented pour and some new ones come with a seperate spout, but I chuck the spout and just use a funnel. I had an occasion on a 110 deg day to carry a full one inside and no fumes. Nice when you have to carry a full can to your out of gas rig.
You can buy new ones for about $50 or used ones for a pittance on the Internet. A guy in our club bought a bunch of used ones all were good and all needed seals. The used ones always need new seals available on the Internet for $.50 each. They mount interchangable with all the usual 5ers. Easy to put a padlock thru the cam handle afte drilling a couple of holes.
Not legal in CA.
Just search for "nato jerry cans" or "nato gas cans" or "nato gas can seals"
Paul

Those look nice!
Do you know if they'll fit into these gas can holders?

When you run the rubicon. When going from lake tahoe to the rubicon trailhead in Georgetown, and wheeling the 'con down the sluice and into rubicon springs, one will need to refuel the average jeep before starting up Cadillac hill towards the tahoma trailhead. If you or a member of your party did not bring enough extra fuel, someone will be walking out to the trailhead. And it's a long steep hike.
