I use a bike cable and padlock run through both of my jerry cans and spare tire that keeps all three safe from all but the most determined thief.

Hardly never - but when ive been in the Colorado mountains it sure beats an hour trip to some lil town to get more fuel before you are ready to leave

When your tank is nearly empty?

Why I need a 5 gallon jerry can of gas is this... my usual desert wheeling areas are well away from the nearest gas stations so it's not often when I can get to my wheeling location with much more than maybe 2/3 of a tank at the very most. Then if I spend a day or two crawling the trails in 4Lo, that will just about empty the gas tank. Being in 4Lo and 1st or 2nd gear gives me something like 2-4 mpg at the most. I have often not had enough gas left to make it to the nearest gas station so that extra 5 gallons makes it much easier for those kinds of longer-distance trips.

cool thread ... does anyone have a system for mounting to a stock rear bumper? I'm guessing the stock tire carrier wouldn't hold up, so i won't even ask for an idea about this.

my other question: How smart is strapping down a jerry can on your roof rack, but laying it flat in a poor effort to lower center of gravity?

If you wanna strap it to you rack, have you seen the flat gas cans they make for 4wheeler racks? they're only about 2" thick, and have tie down points on all sides. give me a few, ill find you a link
