I did some looking on line and we have put Mountain View on our list of "must go to places" when I retire. I hope I can afford to hang up my tools in 5 years and do some traveling.... with the jeep in tow of cource. Maybe see ya there!

Don't forget the spoons it the list of instruments!! I was rasied in Dennard AR, My grandparents had a country store there where people would meet on Sat. nights and play music. My grandfather built a stage and "false front saloon" called the Blue Dog Saloon. They shut it down in the mid 80's and we all started to go to MT. Veiw on Sat. nights. Its a great place to escape the busy world we live in today.

BACK ON TOPIC: What gos down CAN go up!!!

You people act as if a jeep won't tow anything. I tow a 2k boat all the time without any trouble. Someone has definately started a rumor that it is totally unsafe to tow with a TJ. Not true.

i understand why more weight would be over the rear in this case, which would give more traction to the rear and less to the front, but i dont follow how this would affect locking the brakes. am i missing something?

Come go for a ride and I'll be glad to demonstrate the difference between what you perceive incorrectly as "control" and what control actually is.

Pick a different reason because that one is both lame and stupid to perpetuate.

I would have been more worried about going down the hill than up the hill. You have all the weight behind you pushing on your Jeep.

If your worried about going up the hill, slap it into 4 low. You will make it.

Oh man lady, you're going to have your husband run allong side you for 1/4 mile up a 45 degree hill carrying a rock for under your tire while you drive?! Remind me never to marry a woman like you.

Just FYI, the other day, I towed an 18.5' Sea Ray Ski Boat with no problems. I only went about 3 or 4 miles, but one part is a pretty steep hill for about 100 yards. I just threw her into first and she climbed right up. I have 31" and 3.07 also. I wouldn't want to tow it a long way, up long grades, but for around town and short distances it worked great.

The front tires always get at least as much (probably more depending on the setup of the brake proportioning valve) as the rears. Equal stopping force on the tire/wheel with not as much turning force (traction) means the wheel will lock sooner.

jquest1, Welcome to the forum, but if you're going to post a response in a Technical thread, at least offer some useful info.

I think you will probably be OK going up, since you made it down.

As mentioned above, the towing limitation on a TJ is due to the short wheelbase, and the fact that the load can push you around. If that was going to be a problem, it would have been a problem on the downhill, not up.

Wrong about what? That I am laying deep in the 'hollw' because I took everyone's advice? I haven't tried going back up or down after I posted. Based on what everyone says, I think I will be fine when I do try it again. I didn't give my jeep enough credit that it can handle most any challenge. It is just so much fun to drive and I am so glad I own a TJ!

I appreciate all the responses and especially CNY_Jeep for 'reminding' another poster what is and isn't appropriate.

Stay safe, y'all.

If you are going to do it in 4wd you won't have to worry about the front brakes locking before the rear if something goes wrong. In 4wd the front and rear driveshafts are locked together. If either end locks up, it locks the other end.
