Differentials

What makes the Rubi soo special? the locking diffs? i dont know what they do. What does an 98 SE have, differential wise? AND....how much would it be for front and rear locking differentials.

The Rubi comes with a few pieces of off road equipment, like front and rear Dana 44's, ARB air lockers front and rear, an NP241 4:1 t-case, some rockers (people often ditch these), Moab wheels (backspacing isnt practical but people seem to like em) and I'm sure there's more but I'm just goin off the top of my head and probably forgot some things.

Lockers let your tires get traction. It's like a low-tech, but much better working, off road traction control (good analogy?) When engaged, it sends power to the wheels with traction, which helps pull you over/through obstacles that would keep an unlocked Jeep spinning its tires and not goin anywhere

Edit - lockers vary in prices, those ARB air lockers go for around $700 each, Detroits can be a bit over $500, and many others vary in prices. Try to find deals, but dont get crappy lockers. There one of the most important pieces of off road equipment (for heavier off roading)

ARB lockers and OX lockers are manual, while most others are automatic. Different people prefer different lockers, so ask around. Personally I prefer ARB.

the SE model is the 4cylinder TJ, it has 4.10/4.11 gears, not sure about air conditioning

the rubicon doesn't come with ARB air lockers, just some brand of air lockers. I'm sure someone knows who actually makes the parts, but it isn't ARB.

Depends on your application, front/rear, axle, etc.; and your budget. You can go from right around $200 per axle to probably $700-$800, and that's if you can install them yourself. Your best bet (assuming some things) would probably be a lockrite/right in the front D30.

Since the SE only comes with a D30 front and D35c rear, it's open diff. The Rubicon is the only TJ that comes with lockers from the factory. Need to buy lockers aftermarket. Some D44's (dunno year) had a lsd, but you dont hafta worry about that in an SE

soo, im kinda dumb with all this: a D44 is a differential?

just tell me this

what would be a fairly cheap, but quality way to get locking differentials.

are they worth it?

So ARB manual locking hubs?

those would be good?

are they different (better?) then differentials?

Naw, a D44 is an axle. If you dont have a locker, you've got an open diff. If you have a locker or an lsd then you're locked and loaded (not so much for the limited slip, they're no substitute for a locker)

Lockers are definitely worth it if you're into moderate to heavy off roading. I like ARB because they're manual lockers, but they are really up there in price.

Manual lockers allow you to engage or disengage them by air line (ARB) or a manually operated cable (OX) They help because you can either engage them for traction, or disengage them and leave it in open diff. They help on street because there arent any negative side effects of having lockers

Automatic lockers, like Detroit, are always working. This means that on the street, they change the handling of your Jeep and loud clicking can be heard when you corner. You'd have to adjust your driving style a bit, and they can never be turned off.

If you go with automatic lockers, I recommend Detroit. If you go with a manual locker, I'd say get the ARBs.

I'm not exactly what you're asking here... but I'll take a shot. You're stuck with differentials, so don't throw them out just yet But if you are referring to locking hubs versus locking differentials, locking the differential is what you are talking about, there's a decent explanation above of what the function is, basically locking both sides together so that they turn at the same rate versus the side with the least traction getting the power, as is the case in your currently open differential. And I wouldn't worry about the locking hubs until we've fully mastered the differential concept
ARBs (air-actuated differential lockers) are good, that's exactly what I was referring to earlier in the upper end of the price range I mentioned.

if you want a cheap but good locker, get a lunchbox type locker, like the powertrax or aussie locker for the front. You and I both have the dana 35 rear, so dont put to much money in it. I myself, plan on moving to a 8.8 or 9 inch when it comes time to regear and put in a rear locker.
