Differential leak?

Hey Guys,

Trying to get a fix on what the problem is here. I'm still new to working on my rig (or any vehicle for that matter). I think my front differential seal is leaking but I was looking for a second opinion.

Since I'm still a newbie I can't port pictures but I have loaded them onto my personal website. There are 4 pics there from the front and bottom. The addy is www.thenickelblock.com/Jeep

Thanks in advance!

I am getting a "Sorry, forbidden" message when I try to click your links.

Can you upload the pics to Photobucket and post the links here?

Can't see the pics but if it's leaking from the cover, pull it, clean it up and re apply RTV. Can't be too hard.

Is this leak coming from the cover or the Pinion seal?

I receive the same error when trying to access the pictures. Try photobucket, it's what I use and it has been fine.

Bummer. Okay, I'll sign up for photobucket.

The problem is that it's leaking from the seal behind the U-joint.

Sweet! I love this website!

EDIT:: Yikes. Well, given the tools I have with me (on vacation visiting family) I don't know if I can fix this one. Any Jeepers in the Green Bay Area that would want to help me out? I'd make it worth your time! haha. :: EDIT

How bad is it leaking. Is it pouring out or dripping? How far do you have to drive home from vacation?

Having a slight leak from the pinion seal will not ruin the diff. Running low on fluid will ruin the diff. Maybe it can wait...

It's just dripping. About a drip an hour. I've got another 1000 miles back "home" and by "home" I mean "school"

Eek.

you just need a 8mm wrench(to remove u-joint straps) breaker bar, 1-1/8" socket, hammer and a flat head screwdriver. I did mine last weekend, both the front and rear took an hour total.

Bump!

I know This has already been diagnosed, but before I get started I want to make SURE that I'm fixing the right thing.

First pic is from the bottom looking up. Second is from the front at an angle. Third is looking down into the U-Joint.

Ok thats an axle seal leak, not a pinion seal. Just FYI, the differential is the 'pumpkin' in the center of the axle.

Alright. See, this is why I come here! Pardon my noob-ness. I bought this Jeep as my first dive into DIY auto stuff.

An axle seal leak doesn't sound as bad... right?

The inner axle seal is a little harder but not impossible DIY. I'll see if I can find a write-up.
