You may not hear or smell anything yet but you will....
If you just slapped 3.73 gears on a 3.54 and down carrier and put the stuff back together it will not last long. What about the pinion?

swapped both ring and pinion from 3.73 on to 3.07 carrier. And 3.07 ring and pinion on to 3.73 carrier.

Wow! We'll see how fun it is when that thing chews itself to pieces and sends parts all over the trail. Should make for some good video at least!
I understand you want to know why something doesn't work. That is commendable. But just putting something together "to see what happens" is an expensive experiment when it comes to gearing.

Not very expensive. I pulled them out from a pick and pull and brought it home to mess around. Dana30 on Cherokee are alot in my area.

Of course you can. But you have to use the correct carrier for the gear ratio you are switching to.

Oh ok. Scared me there for a bit. I'm planning a re-gear from 3.07 to 3.73. Hopefully a new carrier won't cost to much.

when this gear setup fails, either take your Jeep somewhere and get the new gears installed or do a lot of research before you try to do it yourself again. Gear setup is not a "plug and play" thing; they have very tight tolerances and take a good deal of work to get right.

There are three critical areas in ring & pinion set up.
Pinion preload - Too much and the bearings will eat themselves for lunch. Too little and the pinion shaft is not being held in place properly by the bearings resulting in the bearings eating themselves and the pinion gear eating the ring gear.
Pinion depth - Must be right to ensure contact between the pinion gear and ring gear teeth falls in proper area for strength and wear.
Backlash - Too much and the teeth wear out too fast. Too little and you get excessive heat and the teeth wear out too fast.
With what you did you can be certain that all three of these things are wrong. The damage may not show up for a few thousand miles but I can pretty safely promise you that it will show up.
