diff fluid - better to under fill then over fill?

I just changed my rear diff fluid and was wondering if its bad to put too much in. i have the d35 and was wondering how much should be put in it. i filled it up until it started to come out. i took it for a drive and removed the cap and some fluid came out. should i just keep the cap off and let what comes out drain in teh pan?
