People OVER estimate the D44 shafts strength.You could buy a complete upgraded d44 for $1,000 less than that.

Practically anything can be fixed, the real question would be is it worth fixing. Kinda hard to answer that question without knowing what exactly you broke. What exactly did your mechanic say happened?

Personally, if you aren't comfortable diagnosing the problem yourself I'd take your Jeep somewhere else where there is a competent mechanic who can actually give you a real explanation.

Look in the local forum section and ask for some recommendations. There is nothing really "Jeep" specific for this except for possibly the locker.

Remember the D44 was not injured on the dirt road. You messed it up on the trail/rocks and it finished off on the dirt road. That being said $3k is way high as stated. Find a new shop.

Elias 4wd gets lots of recommendations from different Jeep forums. Never been there for any type of service or repair but it's probably worth looking into if you want a jeep guy

Now I am wondering how do you plan on paying a $3000 repair bill if you can't pay a $50 tow fee?
