i just turned on my head lights like 2 nights ago and the whole dash cluster went out (but the functions light up), the ac controls, the tail lights (although brake lights work), and the orange side markers and running lights. i checked the cluster fuse and its fine. but basically all the stuff that require that 12v illumination just won't turn on. is that a switch thing, or a bad ground, i feel like i'm definately not the first person to have this problem.
everything still works, everything is functioning. that annoying shift light still comes on, when i'm low on gas the light comes on. the airbag light and all that other stuff lights up when i turn it on. but when i turn on the head light switch the gauges don't illuminate, the tail lights don't turn on, the parking lights don't light up...however the head lights still turn on and the brake lights light up when i apply the brake. all the fuses are ok it seems.
As the brake lights are still working fuse 4 in the PDC is OK. That supplies fuses 1 (dash/marker lights and immobiliser), fuse 2 (stop lamps) and fuse 3 (fog lamps) in the internal fuse panel.
I'd pull fuse 1 from the fuse box behind the glove box and check it properly if you've not already pulled it. If the fuse is OK you may have a problem with the head lamp switch, or the wiring from the fuse panel to the switch. Check for live at the tan/black wire which is the feed from the fuse. The outputs for the external and dash lights are on different wires so I expect the problem is with the supply side.
Good job Johnny jeep!! That fixed my issue as well. I didn't think that the parkling lamp fuse (#1) would have anything to do with giving fire to my dash lights, and HVAC lights. Learn something new everyday. Thanks
That happened to me last month. Fuses were fine, but I had no interior lights, no ac light or dash lights, nothing... if you still have an issue replace the knob that you pull out to turn on the lights. That's what I had to do and now its fine.
In case any one reads this for info. I've recently answered someone else with this problem and noticed whilst referring to FSM that the power from the dimmer control goes though fuse 12 inside the Jeep before heading to the dash lamps. If you have front and rear marker lamps but no dash lamps check that fuse too.
Been a while since I have been on, but Jeepforum answered the quick question again! #1 was blown - the only fuse I did not check. Thanks guys!!! :tea::tea:
I just had this happen to me. I would just like to say that this is an invaluable source of information. It just so happened to be the #1 fuse. thanks for being right. it just saved me a whole lot of time trying to diagnose the problem. thanks everyone.
Whoda Thunk it? I was installing wiring for an OOGAH Horn, and shorted a 20-Amp under the hood AND Fuse #1 inside. All the dash lights went out, along with the fog lamps (and the green light on the fog lamp switch itself.) That was the best clues I had. When in doubt, pull ALL THE FUSES and check them with a fuse checker or a multimeter to see if they are gone.
I would have NEVER thought to check that one...thanks man, you are a LIFESAVER!
bumping this thread back up... thank you search function!
Lost my dash lights, fog lights, HVAC lights Saturday night, and all of their fuses were fine... was dreading the headache of tracking down a loose ground, etc. Jumped on here yesterday, searched and found this thread. I walked out, checked fuse #1 and of course it was blown... replaced it and within 30 seconds I had all of my lights back to working order
Hey guys im having the same problem.. fuse 12 is blown but keeps blowin every time i turn the power on.. what is the next step i should take?
fuses 1 ; 2; 3;are ok... how should i find the problem???

Get out your multimeter and see what is over-drawing the amperage. A parellel circuit will lower total resistence and increase amperage, dont forget. You can start with the amp meter in place of the fuse and then go inline with each device on it to see what is taking too many amps.
Have you had the radio out or replaced it recently? The most likely place for a wire to get damaged and short out would be behind the radio. If you have a manual gearbox you will have a connector near the front of the gear shifters that should be empty. It is used in the autos for the shifter illumination. There's been one person I've seen that was blowing fuses because that lamp socket had been shorted out by having a higher rated fuse put in it.
Let me add, that we had a corroded light bulb that was blowing fuses every time we put one in the fuse block. After we find the bulb, changed it, cleaned up the contacts in the brake light housing, it stopped blowing fuses and worked fine.
Just had to toss in a reply here - I've been stalking these YJ "no running lamp or dash light" threads. In my case, I drove somewhere at night and they worked fine, did some stuff, then when I got in to drive back, nothing. Headlights, Brake lights, Turn Signals all worked fine, but no dash or running lights. It was dark and I checked fuses, all looked ok. Then later, in the light, doublechecked again and still all looked fine. Then as I was testing by turning on/off parking lamps, the switch just felt like it wasn't quite 'going' all the way. I pressed a little harder than I'd consider 'safe' and it 'popped' down just another half mm but voila, it worked. It's -10 where I'm at so maybe cold, corrosion or combo of the two in the switch, but thought this might be worth worth mentioning. Had I just pressed harder on the switch, would've saved 30 minutes of fuse checking and knuckle bashing in the dark.
thanx DUH + JOHNNY JEEP,,, i´ve checked all cables -all looked good ,with multimeter i could´t find any problem, i found an connector .( 12V on all the time)with 2 wires only not connected to any device or other connector there is nothing to connect nearly ... fuse #12 still blowing always when when i try to switch the interior lights off (turning the headlamp switch ,blowing the fuse in one position only, just before ,,click,,switching the int. lights off) but the int. lights works with no problem all the times.. dash board lights not works at all...
what do u think??
