In-Dash Inverter Mount

Hey all,

I've got the wiring all ready, parts-wise, to install my inverter, permanently, in the dash. I've mounted the switches and outlets in the center console, and now i'm looking for an out-of-the-way, heat resistant, unlikely to get wet, spot in the jeep for the inverter to go...

should i go in cab or in the dash somewhere?
i read about one guy putting it near the steering column, but i'd prefer passenger side... just to keep the wiring easier...

any ideas guys?

lj

Where ever you put it, just make sure it has some ventilation. Inverters get warm....the more power drawn from them, the hotter they get.

i know... it's kinda got me thinking that i should put it in the engine bay...

on the other hand, it beeps and whatnot when it's turned on... and since i'm wiring it hot, i don't want it to be on without me knowing it... a real conundrum

How about some pics of the console? I'd love to do that mod.

why not mount it to the bottom of the seat bracket...as long as you don't get flooded it would be fine...not a lot of room behind the dash for the most part, unless you pull out the glove
box like I did.

you mean pull it out, and leave it out? hrm.... so you've got a hole in your dash?

the engine compartment is a no-no! it will get weathered real fast! they are not designed to withstand the elements. also, when you say you are wiring it hot, you are putting a fuse inline, right? depending on how big it is, you could always put it in your glovebox, under your seat, in your console, etc. just keep it inside the jeep, and away from any hot or moving parts!

yup, she's fused, 30amp, right near the battery... and in the dash, right below the glove box hinges, mounted between the firewall and air ducts, it should get plenty of air circulation from underneath, and not get wet easily; i go most of the summer topless, so that's about the best place i could find.

I'm still not sure about running the wires through the firewall... where do you guys run 'em?

It unfortunately got too dark for pictures... maybe tomorrow...

if its thin enough you could put it under the rear seat. or mount it to the wall on the pasanger side by your feet then it would be exposed and there would be little to no heat problems.

There is a grommet in the firewall to run wires through (at least on an 04 there is) Laying on your back in the drivers side floor board. looking forward . Just behind the center consol and the floor board air duct on the firewall there is a 2 inch round grommet. If your in the engine compartment find the area of the firewall that starts to curve in. this is in the center of the firewall more on the drivers side. Just behind the Head of the motor.

i didn't look that low, i was hoping for something near where i was working, thinking that there should be one near the in-cab fuse box....

i appreciate the info!

it is thin, but i've got no back seat, and routinely dunk my floorboards in swampwater... no need to invert froggies!
