Dana 44 Trac Lok Differential rebuild
SO I think I need to someday soon rebuild/replace the plates in the diff. It has 130k on her and don't know if it has ever been replaced. A couple of questions:
1. How hard is it? (I did my aussie locker up front)
2. What kit should I get?
4. Anything I should know?
3. Any tutorials out there on this?
I did use the search button but not much has come up
Thanks

First, it was great meeting you out at ODF! Too bad your trail leader didn't show up but it sounds like Steve took care of your group.
So far as rebuilding the Tracloc goes, it's not really something you can do at home. Few in fact pay to have a new clutch kit installed since it isn't cheap to have done. Have you thought about saving up a little so you can swap it out for a Detroit Truetrac limited slip differential that will never need to be rebuilt and doesn't need any additives in the gear lube?

It was great meeting you too. No worries on the trail guide, and he did do a good job! Had a BLAST and want to go camping again VERY soon!
mmm... Yeah, I guess that is what I should do. Didn't know if it was something I could do or have some one do. Thanks, I will be looking for one and have it installed. OH the joys of a Jeep, I can NEVER be satisfied with what I got

They are easy to rebuild, but unless you know someone at the dealer, the parts are very cost prohibitive. Sometimes they dont even seperate clutch packs from complete carriers.
If you have one from a wrecker its cheap, but wrecker 44 carriers are rare.
I just did an ARB and regear for a guy that has 35k miles on a stock 44 trac loc. I imagine he would part with it cheap, but you would be responsible for shipping.

Really guys, Quadratec has the rebuild kit for $75. They're not hard to do.

HotStuff - thanks for the info. Any idea what a fair cost for labor is? (approx how many hours would it take?) I'm getting my axles re-geared, and would like to do the rebuild at that time. Thanks!

If they're in there to re-gear, they'll have the diff carrier out already. That's the hardest part. at that point, it should only take a few minutes to swap out the old clutches for the new ones.
