Dana 44 rubicon rear limited slip gear oil, synthetic or regular gear oil what weight

Jerry wrote this in another thread

"The gear lube that you fill your Dana 44 with Tracloc with must be a GL-5, and it either needs to be "compatible with limited slip differentials" (or words to that effect on the back label) or if it doesn't say that, you need to add about 4 oz. of Friction Modifier which any auto parts store will have for sale. If the gear lube you use says it is compatible with limited slip differentials, it already contains the required friction modifier so don't add any more. Since you live in a temperate climate state, nearly any viscosity GL-5 gear lube is fine. 70W-80, 75W-90, 80W-120, 90W-140 or variations of those. If you tow a trailer behind your Jeep, stick with a higher viscosity rating like 80W-140 or 90W-140 etc. If you don't tow, pretty much any of them are fine. "

I was thinking about changing out the diff fluid with either royal purple or AMSOIL. if i use them i wouldn't need friction modifier right? if i just use regular gear oil i just need modifier in the rear right? what viscosity should i use? I tow about a ton of coal behind Jeep in my m416 and firewood during the winter here in PA. The jeep only has about 35k on it and I really only drive it during the weekend to keep the miles off it

The owner's manual for your jeep calls for 75-140W synthetic for your Rubi D44.

I have the same axle and filled mine with Royal Purple.

Are you still under warranty? I am. I went with mobil 1 75w-145 synthetic.

The royal purple debate will rage on forever. I don't get caught up in their advertising campaign, regardless of how much they pay "powerblock" TV to push their products.
