Call a diferent dealer, or haggle with them. You don't need Mopar fluid. You can buy aftermarket fluid as long as it's GL-5 or GL-6 rated.

Buy 3 bottles for (front and rear) and about 12-18 inches of tubing that will fit the tapered tip. The tubing will make filling the diff much easier.

I went with Mobil 1 75w-145 full synthetic. $16.99 qt.

The amount is stamped on the tags attached to the diffs. Big difference between front and rear but I don't remember the amounts.

My 2005 FSM says 4pts for each axle... so 4qts. will do both axles with a little left over, at least when I did mine anyway.

Yup, my FSM says the same.

But the diff tags say:
40 oz. front.
60oz. rear + 4oz LSD additive. 64 oz = 2 qts.

It should have been running out the front filler hole way before you got to the 2 quart mark.

Just reading through this thread I found it interesting that Jeep recommends (for Rubicons) the 75W-140 synthetic gear lube for front and rear when towing. So I thought to myself 'Really... for the front when towing. How often do you tow in 4wd that you need different gear lube in the front diff'. It got me wondering if Jeep just put that in there as an up sell item because sythetic is supposed to be better without ever really testing it.

Yeh...makes you wonder.

I did it for 2 reasons. One, I'm under warranty for another 3 years and 40,000 miles and don't want to give my dealer any reasons to say, "sorry" it's not covered. Second, with the same front and rear it simplifies things and I'm all about simplifying things.

when you put aftermarket covers on a Rubicon you can't go by just feel for the correct level of oil. So how much should you put into the front and back?

Interesting question.

When I did my front diff last weekend, I added 40 oz just like the tag says. The other night looking at my new front SOLID cover sitting on the work bench, I started thinking the same thing. I've been planning on seeing how much difference in volume there is between the 2 by just using water to fill them. I have to say that by looking at them on the bench there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference. The SOLID is certainly thicker but I'm not sure about the volume.

The fill plug is higher on the cover so you can't count on the lube coming out the fill hole when it's full. If I can't determine anything from the volume test, I'll just put in the 2 quarts and call it good.

I know this thread is a little old but I have a question, I just put Mobile 1 synthetic 75w-90 in both my differentials, I dont do any hard wheeling or anything do you think this will be fine? If i get to where I'm doing some more heavy duty wheeling should I put different fluid in?

Sorry to hijack, but I’ve been searching on this subject and can’t find a definite answer for a Rubicon. I just changed my diff covers and am having a bit of sticker shock over the price of synthetic gear oil, not to mention several threads say regular oil is actually better.

Can I run non-synthetic oil instead of synthetic in my 03 Rubicon? Why do the non-Rubicon D44 recommend 80/90 for normal use and 75/140 for towing vs. Rubicons recommending 75/140 for all uses? Does this have to do with the operation of the Rubicon locker?

If non-synthetic is okay what, which one is the correct weight for wheeling and towing, 85/140 or 80/90.

Bendover and let this guy do his work

Just go over to Checker or Napa and get a gallon of Valvoline 75w-90 or 80w-140 and be done with it. Non synthetic, high performance gear oil. Plain and simple.

wow this thread has been around for a while.

80w140 conventional should be okay in the rubi diff.

If you can find it, look for swepco 80w140. Good stuff.

What does the rear D44 216mm come with from the factory?

I'm getting an axle seal replaced, and they said that the rear diff calls for synthetic, i believe they said 75w-90.
