dana 300 swap!!

I am working on putting a dana 300 in my jeep. The problem I am running into is that everyone says a NP 231's front yoke will mount with no issue. I tried it and the dust cover hangs on the case and locks everything up. Any ideas?

Are you building a custom crawler? Any reason the NP231 is not going to be used?

a 1310 CV yoke for the 300

You can pull the dust cover off.

The D300 yokes front and rear(stock anyways) use the same 26 spline yokes as a D44 pinion.

New yokes are only like $50 or so if you look around.

It has always been my understanding that a D300 is a much stronger design than an NP231. It is also easy to twin stick a D300 to allow full control over the TC, i.e. you can choose the operation of both output shafts independantly, which lets you do things like use front wheel drive only.

If it gives an indication of why you would want a D300, many people will tell you that the D300 is what the design of the Atlas TC is based on.

I don't know what all goes into a swap, but I do know it involves a lot of work, since the D300 has to be flipped to be used with a stock TJ drive train.

D300 is gear driven, IIRC, which makes it much stronger. It can also be twin sticked and I think it may have more desirable ratios.

What is a vehicle with a D300 for a pull? It would be sweet to have the twin sticks

Usage

The Dana 300 was used only in CJs from 1980 until 1986. The first year the Dana 300 was available there was a slight difference from transfercases used in '81-'86 CJs. The 1980 Dana 300 features a shorter tail housing which allows a slightly longer rear driveshaft.

Random info time from when i was doing research for my swap (still not done though )


A long tailshaft housing will accept the speed sensor from your np231

a flipped D300 WILL NOT fit on a 32rh (at least have never seen it successfully) because the shift rails will not clear the transmission pan.

You do have to notch the front output shift rail to be able to use FWD H only though

Why to use it: Or at least my reasons
1 why not?
2 gear driven
3 twin stickable
4 CHEAP 4:1 gears
5 almost half the size of a 231. A d300 with a box 4 rox crawl box made out of a 231 is the same size as a 231 itself

Anyone using the High Impact Dana 20 for Wranglers yet?

The Tcase is quite a bit smaller than the 231, so There are no clearance issues.

dana 20s do not have the option for 4:1. they are 2:1 stock. i think you can find 3.15:1 low range, thats as low as you can go. but it has the same bolt pattern and will work.
