Dana 30 Axle Shaft U Joint...

So my left axle shaft u joint is clicking and clacking under mild pre-load and crawling situations. Atleast I THINK it's my u-joint, it hasn't done "the angry sparrow" chirp but i'm getting a clacking noise from time to time when that specific tire is under little stress, so i figured its a bad U-joint. I've had the Jeep almost 5 years now and have only done the DS U-Joints, never the ones for the axle shafts, so I will probably just do the front end. But as far as your guys' experience goes, does this sound like a correct diagnosis? It only makes the clacking sound in 4 wheel while i'm turning. Its def. a click-clack and not a squeak/chirp. I searched the threads and couldn't find a write up on removing the axle shafts for a Dana 30, i've never done it and need to see how its done. Also the front end on the Jeep is stock, whats the stock U-Joints for the front shafts?
-Thanks
Evan

P.S- If you guys think it might be something else, please throw in your opinions.

Maybe try lifting the front end up and try to track it down further? Have you met Stu yet? http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/ujoint1/u-joint-1.htm Stu also have write-ups for getting everything apart, and back together.

Stu, and 4x4xplor both have a bunch of nice write-ups.

If I jack the front end up and spin the tire do you think I would be able to hear it? It only makes the noise in 4WD, while in 2WD driving home no noise, no vibes no nothing. It's only when power is being delivered to the front axle. I can still try your method, it aint gonna hurt anything. Also when i went to go scope out the knuckle area on that side I noticed the small dust shield/cover that is supposed to cover the seam where the shaft slips into the axle tube itself is loose and pulled away from the axle tube. This wouldnt cause any damage or defects to my shaft could it? And no Benderff never saw these guys' sites, thanks for the heads up!
Now that i got that write up on the install/removal I just need some more info guys !
The first and last picture are just ones of the U-Joint to see if anyone can spot something that doesn't look right. The 2nd picture is one of the lil dust cover i was speaking up. This cover is loose and not sandwiched flush next to the axle tube like the other side is. Is this a problem?

-Thanks
Evan

Grab the inner axle yokes at u-joint try and move up/down/side to side, if there is any play at u joint area then it needs replaced, and by the way ur tie rod looks bent to me also.

Thanks Aussie, nah my tie rod is fine man. I'm taking pictures with a helmet camera and the lens is like a 170 degree view. So it gets the "fish-eye" look. Thanks for the look out though. And yeah it wriggles a bit, I think it's safe to say that u joint is shot. I hope that's where the noise is coming from. This had me "sweating like a whore on dollar night" my last wheeling trip. I'm a little anal about having a tip-top sounding/driving rig when i'm out on the trail. I hate doing work on my jeep when it's not in my garage, it messes up my whole day if I break something.

Changing the axle U-Joints is super easy. Remove the wheel, caliper and rotor. Remove the big nut on the axle. I think it's a 30mm socket. Remove the three 12 point bolts that hold the whole wheel bearing/hub/etc on and it just falls off. Pull out the axleshaft.

Change the joint and put it back together. Theres a TQ for the big 30mm nut I'm sure that somebody will chime in with it.

I've put a couple on without ever taking the axle nut off just the twelve point bolts and the hub and axle shaft slides out as one

So the "Spicer 5-760x" is the U-Joint of choice for the front Dana 30 shafts applications?

the 760 is stronger, but not service able like the 297, it's up to you
