Crank Position Sensor

Hey All!

I'm trying to check out my Crank Sensor to see if it causing my TJ cough. Being a novice at this mechanic stuff, I'm not too sure what I'm looking for. Can someone let me know where it is and what to look for when I find it?

The crank position sensor is located on the drivers side of the transmission at the top of the bell housing
Two bolts hold it onto the bell housing and the electrical connector comes up to the back of the intake manifold at the top left side of the throttle body.

My wiring melted in the center near the exhaust and would cause a stumble at times- it got pretty bad before I found it- I removed the sensor and cut out the exposed wiring and replaced it with wiring a little longer to reroute it away from the heat.

is a link to a "high performance" sensor. I haven't tried one so I don't know what it does.
