Yes you have to take all those bolts out from around the filter canister to gain access to the filter.
I have not done this yet, I will give is a couple weeks then check it, see how it fairs.

Me too but I didn't want the K&N so I used the stock airbox & filter.

Wow so I don't think this will work with the yj, there is no gap like on the tj between the engine bay and the dash. I took my vent thing off the hood and what seemed to be the backside of my dash was in there.

I used a K&N Apollo Intake kit.
All in all I am pleased, it went in pretty good, and JUST fit.
The stock tubing was cut to length, and attached to the Apollo housing using a rubber sleeve from Autozone.
Some electrical tape had to be wrapped around the stock tube and Apollo to get them to match up with the sleeve.
The sleeve was 3" and the tubes were about 2.75" OD.
The stock tube is a bit of a POS. Its quite sturdy, but thats cuz its THICK !!!
The ID is not very large at all, and not even round, this will get replaced with some nice metal tubing later on.
A 3.25" hole saw was used to put a hole in the firewall, there was barely room for it.
The hole was then lined with some rubber hose. Cut the rubber hose long ways, and slide it over the edge so there is no sharp edge.
Then the flexible end of the Apollo ran into the cowl, with the flared end on the end, like the end of a trumpet, inside the cowl.

Seat of the pants test drive around the block shows improvement
It sounds a bit better, after taking the carpet out, all I heard was fan noise, not it sounds like a motor again.
Not loud by any means, just a slight throaty sound.
It seems to have just a bit more pickup, or at least wakes up a bit earlier in the RPMs.
I will see how the gas millage goes though, and I am very interested to see how it does on hot days.
I was noticing a lack of performance on hot days.

~John
Set up looks good man! I was thinking about doing this mod with a KN Apollo filter as well. Do you have any pics from inside the cowl just to see how you placed the tubing in there.
Thanks

Sorry, I forgot to take a pic under the cowl
There isnt much to that part though, that flexible tube that is supplied with the Apollo just runs into the cowl a couple inches,
and the supplied flared trumpet end is placed on the end of the tube.

Where did you get that cover? How much if you don't mind me asking? Does a cone filter fit in there? I like that setup and am looking for different ideas on how to for the hummer intake located on the flange(?) above the hood.
I currently am running a k&n cold air intake package with the cone filter and want to modify that to run a cowl intake. I've seen a couple of writups on the idea but am looking for more info/ideas from the jeep gods before I get started.

Here's more info on it, http://www.knfilters.com/universal/apollo.htm . I have a buddy of mine that originally bought it from Advance Auto a little while ago but it didn't fit right with his set-up so he installed an ARB snorkel instead so he gave me the kit . I don't know how much it retails for but im sure a quick call to your nearest auto store would answer that question.

Thats fine, just out of curiosity did you angle the Apollo tube towards the cowl vent or did you just stick it straight into the cowl?
Thanks for the help!

you can find the Apollo UNIVERSAL kit for about $116 to $125 shipped.

I bent the tube over toward the vent a bit, and angled it down some.
That way if water were to pour in the vent, it would not just be pouring down the intake like a funnel.

You wont get better gas mileage with this. You may get better performance though.

This mod is great for getting your airbox up higher, and I really like it, but it will not improve your MPG's.

That all depends.
I personally know a couple ppl that have done similar setups and gained over 2 to 3 mpg.

For example, one guy had a REAL short tube, to a cone filter, but it sat right above the engine.
While that had very little resistance, it was pulling in Very hot air, thats probably the hottest area under the hood.
He extended the tubing, and places the cone filter in the cowl, and gained 3 mpg.

I have only been driving mine two days, but I can feel a slight difference.
Especially today, it was quite hot out, and my Jeep would noticably loose power on hot days.
But that wasnt the case today.

If you have a bit more power, you dont need to give it as much skinny pedal, and that should save gas.

I ordered a Scangauge II today, so I will also be doing some testing for intake air temps.
I will test a stock setup, and then mine, and see what difference in air temp there is.

~John

You get more power because your engine is getting more air and is able to burn more fuel. That decreases your mileage. At the RPM's you drive at to achieve the best mileage, the CAI has no effect.

Just ask these guys, they pretty much know most everything related to mileage with very few exceptions.
