Yea, but put this backwards so the opening faces the windshield would be better.. and you would get better airflow.. It has something to do with how the air hits the windshield... forces air into the cowl better then it facing forward.

That is what I may do next.

Excellent write-up thanks alto, this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for.
I plan to do the same thing, just looking for the parts now, might use much of what you listed.
The filter you have, is it resistant to water? Will water make it fall apart? Or is it more like a K&N type material?

I also plan on adding that Cowl Scoop, and yes, I have also read that facing it BACKwards is better, due to the vortex effect of the air off the windshield.
That would block water better also anyway.

I need to look into the cowl area more, I am not sure I understand where its drain is.
And why water may get into the cab. I need to make it so that a good bit of water can rush into that cowl vent, and still be ok.

The drain is actually in the front of the cowl vent.. if you open your hood, you will see this black plastic thing on the back of the firewall that kinda stops off at the bottom.. this is the water drain.

inside the cowl, before you attempt to remove the air-dam/intake air vent or manipulate it.. Keep in mind it prevents water from going into your floor boards inside the rig, just try to see if you can manipulate your setup without removing it.

I had screwed around with mine prior to this writeup and in a torrential downpour, my floorboard would get wet. it is an easy problem to fix, just see if you can do it without messing with it.

the material is K&N like cotton with wire mesh..

I believe the setup is similar.. just pop off your cowl and see what you have to play with

I don't really care for the safari type exterior snorkles. I want a cowl snorkle setup but do you have to remove the cowl to change the air-filter?
Unscathed: what is that box thing under your hood? is that an air-filter box too?

1cleanTJ: could this what your talking about? 01-04 Honda Civic kit on ebay. The buy it now price was only $5.95. HOWEVER, the shipping was $27.

I have been trying to figure out an intake that goes to vents in the hood, using some sort of canister, but there are problems with that. I was trying to get around having to take the cowl cover off to clean the filter. Found some decent canisters, but room and routing are a problem. Even running the intake to the cowl.

It seems the cowl intake is easier. There is a place on e-bay that sells polished aluminum 3" tube for cheaper than the plastic stuff at auto zone. Although I don't care about the polish. I was going to insulate it anyway, and plastic is less conductive so I might use that.

So my only real question is can you fit a regular full length filter in the cowl? I've seen many with the short ones, but by your pictures there seems to be room. So is there enough for a 9" AME? My point being that it would last longer between cleanings.

Having to remove the cowl to check or replace the filter is my only complaint about this setup.
I would rather just run the intake to the cowl, but I also cannot find a nice canister to use for the filter.

I'm at work, but I can provide pics another time if you are interested. I found a air box that uses oval filters. It has 3" circular in and out on top and bottom, and is about 8.5" deep that I think I can fit a full size 9" AEM filter in. It will fit a short filter no problem.

The only problem I am having is where to put it. I thought about sucking from somewhere on the hood, but that poses it's own challenges with opening the hood and sealing the intake. Running it to the cowl poses problems of routing, but solves many others. I really want to figure this out.

That sounds interesting, post up some pics when you have time.

Its gonna be tough to find, a relatively small canister, that holds a proper filter,
I would have no problem running the intake into the cowl, if the filter was still under the hood.
I would like to find a small canister, so i can just stick it inline with the intake tube, as it goes straight over to the cowl.
I want it as short as possible.

Yeah, I bought this. It was only $32 shipped. Maybe it'll give me some ideas.

If you look at Unscathed's pics, notice the airbox over his engine. If that could be made to hold an airfilter, it would be perfect. Then just run a hose into the cowl area like his, but stop it at the firewall.

Heres the under hood airfilter box that Kerndone did to his. He said this airbox is from a Buick V6 (dont know which model). This would work for me.

OK...I cant upload the pic, so do a search for Hummer cold air intake.

I don't care about a cold air intake, but I do want the intake to be above any water I may cross. I don't want a snorkle. I had one (on an older jeep) and it got torn off by a tree.
