I've always liked the look of them providing you've installed one for a reason - like a supercharger install or engine swap that requires a bit more room under the hood. Otherwise, they're a bit goofy, are expensive, and don't serve much of a purpose. But then aesthetics is a personal thing so that's just one opinion. It's your Jeep, do what you think is cool.

they serve a great purpose, feeding cooler air into the engine compartment. They utilize the high pressure area at the base of the windshield to force feed air into the rear of the engine compartment and then down between the fenders and the motor to cool things down just a little more. Most air, with a normal hood, comes through the rad and is heated to about 100ºF before it hits the engine. With a cowl hood, only the front half of the engine compartment gets this heated air as the rear half is fed with nice cool air from the cowl induction. Believe me it does help keep things a little cooler.

Umm I might be missing something but offroading at 5mph the cowl induction is not going to be getting much air. And unless there is some way to block the opening I have visions of mud soup being served all over the engine. Hex

This link has been shown here on a number of occasions. However, I'll post it again. If you look at the research done by this guy you can see that the underhood areas that need the most ventilation are on the sides of the hood - to the front left and right sides of the driver and passenger respectively - not in front of the existing vents. I agree that a scooped hood will result in some benefits, but not to the extend that people seem to think as hood scoops do not directly address the peoblem areas under a TJ's hood. Further, I do not feel that purchasing a brand new scooped hood is a cost-effective method of better ventilating the engine compartment. And Hexabin is right, if you use your TJ for offroad your engine compartment will quickly be covered by mud, dirt, sand, whatever, as debris filters through that pretty new hood scoop opening. As I said before though, it's a matter of personal prefernece. Everyone has their own ideas of what looks good especially when they factor in the use of their vehicle. That's why there's chocolate and vanilla. ![]()
