Coming To The Dark Side.......
Ok let me first say that I have been a die hard Land Cruiser fan for quite some time....
But lately I have been over the new LJ'S and thinking about taking the plunge..Don't get me wrong guys, I will never part with my FJ40. I'm just looking to add to the stable here with something that I can DD. Ok so I'm looking at a 2006 Unlimited 6sp with 4k miles. It comes with three tops and soft doors. Rubicon 4.5" long arm kit, Rancho res. front shocks and RS9000s in the rear, JKS sway bar disconnects, american racing teflon wheels with 35 MTRs, rear tire carrier with hi-lift (not sure on the brand), and an aftermarket front bumper that is winch ready. I believe that it also has the sye kit, this uses a cv type shaft right? Oh and upgraded seats, again not sure on the brand there. Asking price is 30k.... So I talked with the owner (friend of a friend) and he said that he paid 30k for it new and put another 9k into it that he can back up with reciepts. Soooo opinions???

I dont know..seems like he paid too much for the LJ in the first place...maybe if it was a Rubi...Anyway, I sold my 78 FJ40 right after a my divorce, to pay off...well..ya know..the ex.
I had $20+ into it and sold it sight unseen to a guy in Texas for $10k. Though I love my TJ, it aint a 40 in my opinion. I miss it all the time. It was slow, loud, rude and crude, but a complete beast. It got attention my TJ can only dream about. On the other hand, my Jeep is more nimble and refined and I believe it can go where most leaf sprung/carbed 40s cant. Yes, go ahead and buy a Jeep TJ/LJ, but never sell that 40. If you havent already, I would look around a little more..whats the Kelly or edmunds on a stock jeep LJ? Go on that and add maybe 40-50% of the total parts (not labor). Thats just my stupid internet opinion. Good Luck.

Sorry about your luck... glad you've woken up and joined us.. may the force be with you.
Sounds like not a horrible deal... but I'm sure you can find one a litlte cheaper though.

If you can afford to spend $30k on a modded rig, my humble opinion and advice is to shop around for a non modded TJ, let say you will spend about 10K/15K ? well you'll have from 10K/5K to spend in mods, to build it as you like it, to know exactly what and how has been done to it. Your Jeep. just imho.

Why is he selling with only 4k miles? If you can work him down into the mid 20's then you got yourself a pretty good dealif there is nothing wrong with it. I would say be patient with him, work him a bit and look around at the same time. The 05/ 06 LJ's have all the making of a cult vehicle in a few years, so I would chase one with low miles and a good build for awhile, just don't overpay. He is still looking at what he has into it, not what it is worth on the street- takes awhile sometimes for a seller to get real.

Sorry guys maybe I didn't clairify but it is a Rubicon LJ model with D44s and lockers, not sure what else sets them apart from the standard wrangler. I don't think that he is in a position where he has to sell, just lost interest I guess.

It's not a smoking deal, but it's a fair deal for a Rubi LJ. As long as it's the mods you want it's no more than you'd have in it... I know I have a lot more in mine. It's essentially new and the LA kit alone is half the mod cost you listed. And the 30k new is possible. Mine stickered at $34k but I didn't pay that.

Welcome, Treemite. I am a fellow yota lover too. I just bought my 97 TJ from the procedes of the sale of my '93 Toyota Pickup with a SAS and a bunch of other stuff. I have also owned several FJ40s and i still have a 4runner. My opinion is just like everybody else's here. I would buy cheaper and build it the way you want it. If you don't want to build one and want to buy a built one then go ahead. You are the man with the money, we can stomp on your hands all day, but you are the one who has to let go of the edge.

If I understand you correctly, you plan to add LJ as a DD plus keep your FJ40? I wouldn't think this particular LJ is suited for a DD.
My TJ Sahara is the DD, and I noticed a big difference going from 30" GS-A to 31" MT/R tires. I can't no longer drive aggressively like I used to. So, I can tell you this LJ with 35" MT/R I would not even consider as a DD even for a minute. Anyway, good luck and don't look back once the decision is made.
