cold start = loud squeaking noise

When I start the jeep in the morning every day (it's like 15-25 degrees out now) it makes a very loud squeaking noise for a good 10 minutes until the engine heats up.

Sounds in tune, like it's a fan belt or serpentine or radiator belt or something.

Should I be concerned? Or is that normal.

It didn't make this very loud squeaking noise when it was warmer out.

Probably the serpentine belt, try tightening it a bit. The adjuster is right by the power steering pulley. Loosen the locking bolt/nut behind the bracket first.

Could be a belt, there is only one on a TJ so it's a quick easy change.

I sprayed WD-40 all over the fan too inside to see if it was the fan squeaking, but that didn't help.

If it is the belt, and I don't tighten it, will anything bad happen? or is it just an annoyance.

my 97 did this also, and i tightened the tensioner with a 9/16 i think and it solved the problem completely. the bad thing that can happen if your belt is as loose as mine got it could slip off track and throw everything out of whack, its an easy 2 minute fix

replaced the serp belt, still squeaking but not as much as before and not for as long. Still really annoying!

Ugh!

I had a similar problem with my jeep and it ended up being the tensioner pulley. I got a new one at autozone for $20 and that fixed it right up. Apparently the bearings were going out.

Mine did this. It squeals mostly because the alternator is working its hardest at that point. I put on a new belt, thinking it was plenty tight but it still did it. Well, it seems like because of the belt routing on my '97, there really is not a lot of belt in contact with the alternator. I had to make the belt even tighter; but then I finally beat the noise. For the record, squeal equals wear.

Could something be leaking on it? I had a slow coolant leak that was getting on the pulleys making them squeak.

The oil pump drive assembly did this on my 2006 and it drove me nuts trying to find the source. Belt; nope, idler pulley; nope, alternator; nope. Then I learned about the 2005-2006 OPDA failures.

Does your jeep have an OPDA on it?
