CNG ideas, plans, and advice
With the ever growing higher gas prices and with bad gas mileage that jeeps get, gas can become pretty expensive. I get around 14mpg and can spend over 6,000 a year on gas. This makes you think about way's to improve this cost especially when you love your jeep and want to keep it. Yes I can see some people's arguments as natural gas would not outweigh the cost, however when your lucky like myself and can be gifted with a well in your back yard giving you free natural gas you need to take advantage of it. So has anyone had any experience with kits to convert your jeep or any vehicle at that considering we will most likely convert our 3 other vehicles also. Most likely we will run them bi-fuel so if we go on a long trip we can unfortunately switch back to gas. So does anyone have some ideas or advice. Also as most of you, I always want more power and with the kits running bi fuel you can expect a possible 10% decrease in power which would work but I would hate. So while im working on that area what about just throwing a new 8 in the engine bay. Could i find new ones with some good power that is already equipped with cng capabilities, and also what all price will I be looking into with an engine swap, im new to this area of the jeep really. I know it will be pricey but I am wondering just how pricey, with having free gas it may just be affordable.

I know that Chevy sells a kit to convert the 350 (or 5.7 vortec as they like to call it now) to CNG. My neighbor did the conversion on his 1998 Chevy 1/2 ton truck. It probably helps that he owns a natural gas company. I do know that it runs a hell of a lot cleaner (he changes the oil every 8 months and it comes out the same color it went in), the downside is that you end up messing up the piston rings.
The way that he has his set up, he can switch between CNG and regular gasoline by flipping a switch. I'll probably drive over this weekend sometime and ask him to give me details on his setup, and let you know. He does have a pretty large tank in the bed of the truck, but he fabbed a cover out of some diamond plate, so it hides it and it looks like a truck-box at the same time. Pretty neat, but I wonder where the tank would go in a TJ?? I would be too scared to drive with that thing in the TJ especially since I'm a smoker. Do your research, because CNG is a very viable option, in fact most vehicles sold abroad often come with different fuel options - regular gasoline; CNG; or diesel. The conversion kit usually just adds a regulator and a different style injector that can spray the CNG into the combustion chamber. Its not that fancy. Anyways, hope this helps, and when I see my neighbor, I'll talkto him and let you know.

I guess that for about $2-$3k you can do it. I found this website:

your biggest hurdle is where to put the tanks........safely !!!! I have a friend that has been running cng for years on many different vehicles.....he invested in a filling station at his home but has only ever outfitted fullsize vans and trucks.......the sites mentioned above are all good info.........

Tank Placement Suggestion
Hey folks,
I would recommend taking a look through this website: https://www.cngoutfitters.com/ I would call the sales folks and ask if they've converted any Wranglers and where they put the tank. If I had to guess, I would say they removed the rear seat and placed the tank there. I'm sure most people are rolling their eyes over the concerns on safety of having a compressed tank behind your seat but in all the research I've done, I haven't found too many cases of exploding tanks. For those of you who believe only what they see... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FHTXwpVMvs Either way, good luck with the project. Please post your progress as you go. I'm still researching whether I'll convert mine but with a PG&E filling station just 4 blocks away and the price being $1/gallon cheaper than gasoline, it's getting harder and harder to discount the idea of converting. Ha. CNG is 4.56 a gallon here. I could understand doing this in Utah where is is .93 a gallon, but here it's just not worth it.
